Question for anybody that listed to Marty Hurney's show

Has he stayed in touch with people and players at the organization? Has he ever badmouthed anyone or even critiqued them? If not, was he as unlistenable as I'm imagining? Did he ever say why he stayed in Charlotte and joined radio instead of getting another job with another team?

Yes, he has stayed in close touch with most in the organization. He always told people who asked that he did not have any interest whatsoever in getting back into the NFL or at least in the GM role. Guess this situation was ideal for him and of course $.

His show wasn't terrible and he definitely brought an insiders perspective but it didn't keep my interest most days. He would critique here and there but for the most part was very positive when talking about the Panthers and the organization itself. Never heard him bad mouth anyone.

Did he ever mention anything about team needs or weaknesses type thing?

Just curious if he maybe showed his hand at all as to what he may do going forward

Yeah he used to but it's been awhile since he has been on the radio so I can't remember any specifics. He handed the on air stuff off to other people months ago as far as I know. I forget when exactly but I haven't heard him on air for quite some time unless he went to some time slot that I didn't tune in. I normally don't listen to 730 much.

It's my understanding that he is the owner/operator of the station. What is interesting is that the format changed completely right before Gman was fired and all new lineups of people came in to host the shows.

Looking back, it's almost like he was getting all that in place because he knew something else was on the horizon. Pure speculation and maybe a coincidence but it was curious timing.

Maybe someone who listened on a more regular basis than I did could verify that.

Hurney didn't want to can't work for any NFL team not named the Carolina Panthers

Wow some of you are so pathetic in life and don't understand that some ppl fall in love with a area and maybe would rather stay and do another job in that area instead of moving their family and being stress out some where else for a check..

well, all of ESPN has been getting a major shake up.  I assume the changes at the radio station were just part of the ESPN housecleaning.

Didn't listen to Marty much, but I recall he was almost always complimentary of Gettleman and the direction the team was moving in.  Never heard him bad mouth.  He often did have an interesting perspective and I enjoyed listening to him.  He was often good at identifying the strengths & weaknesses, but I can't think of anything he said this past season that would help point to what direction he might move.

I thought one of the most interesting comments of the day was Ron's remark that he's eager to hear Marty's perspective on the roster as he will bring an outside perspective... an evaluation by one who understands what they're trying to build but has not had a role in the actual building of the roster to date.

I'll be very curious to see how the roster evolves...

This.

I can't handle listening to WFNZ for much time at all. When I needed a local sports fix I'd occasionally listened to his show. I found his show interesting. None of the nonsense you'd typically hear on sports talk radio now days. The conversation was much more intelligent. It did not pander to emotional fans and nonsense to get people riled up.  In short, most people here wouldn't care for it :P

edit: The only person I remember him being critical of was himself.

    • Personally I think he's a nightmare to cover I think linebackers generally aren't fast enough to keep up with him in coverage and cornerbacks don't have the strength to tackle him one-on-one in physically bring them down which would normally lead to a broken tackle or a nasty stiff arm or just bully ball play sure you could find a receiver with comparable speed like Cooper but he's faster than Cooper sure you can find a wide receiver that is the same size but he's probably More powerful than them and a better blocker.  The size speed athleticism package that he is in is completely unique it's easier to say I'd rather have just a big blocker because we've never seen this type of profile before I'm a risk taker I think you would be God blessed if this was there at 19 I think if you can get a guy that's a tight end who immediately becomes the fastest guy on your offense and at the same time that third wide receiver that can stretch and burn defenses over the top that's the perfect what the Panthers need type weapon.
    • I think you're under selling Sadiq. They are two different players in terms of how they win. Loveland is 2 inches taller maybe 5-6 pounds heavier. Comparing his speed to sadiq.. well your comparing a 4.7 guy to a 4.3 guy I'm seeing a guy that can take a bubble screen from the tight end position and turn it into a house call. I'm not saying the guy is a certified home run pick but I don't think there's really a president's for a comparison for this kind of athlete. It's easy to say this doesn't look like Warren or Loveland because we haven't seen guys that fit this profile The closest you might be able to get is Vernon Davis.  He's not as sure far as those guys were but at 19 I think almost everybody is going to have some warts and he's a lottery ticket of could be top 10 in the draft player or could fail I am more of a risk taker I think he fits the athletic profile that could be a homerun, like I said he's almost 40 lb bigger than Cooper and like 4-5 in taller than Cooper so and he's faster. So whatever you think Cooper gives you I think he does that and more. If you want to go with one of the office alignment I can understand that as well but for value as a receiving threat I don't think there's a bigger value at number 19.
    • I’ve haven’t seen anything that says we have interest in Njoku?
