Panthers with 12 former 1st round picks in 2 deep, EASILY tops in the league

Disclaimer-the draft is an inexact science.  But, for the most part, draft capital matters.  By my estimation our draft capital that'll take the field swallows the rest of the league whole.  Please check my math or correct me if I'm wrong, but no other team even has as many as 10 former 1st round picks in their 2 deep.  Much less a former #1 overall pick MVP at QB, a top 10 DPOY, FIVE former top 10 picks, eight top 15, and 16 in the top 45.

Homerism aside, we have the most talented roster in the NFL by a long shot if draft capital means anything (and, it does).  It's shockingly not remotely close.

Thoughts?  Correct me if I'm wrong.

Really interesting info.

Can you break it down further...

Panthers total 1st rounders Total and by Offense / Defense.

I probably should be able to come up with the total in my head, but I'm not really able to focus on football today, in the middle of some other stuff.

I also don't have time today.  What I really want to do is use this chart for our entire roster, add it up, and compare it to every other team's 53 man roster by draft value points.  I'm guessing it's not even remotely close how many more "points" our roster has.  http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/draft/draft-trade-chart/

I believe that draft capital means something to varying degrees, but it's not the be-all-end-all. You obviously can't ignore it, as historically it's the first and second rounders that have the most staying power on a percentage basis, but talent comes from every round, and sometimes no round at all.

If you do your homework correctly, your first and second rounders are supposed to stay and start in this league (at some point), and hopefully with you. It's after those first couple of rounds that helps separate the men from the boys or the wheat from the chaff in terms of franchises that sustain excellence and those that perennially flounder around. Moreover, it's also the front offices that can acquire first and second round talent, or just talent, period, that fits who keep themselves in contention. So although drafting and retaining "2 deep" talent helps, it's but a part of determining the overall quality of a franchise.

I count 19 in total...this is based on the ourlads depth chart. Are you just counting players the Panthers actually drafted or players drafted, acquired via trade, FA, etc.?

Offense (11): K.Benjamin; D.Funchess; C.Samuels; M.Kalil; A.Silatolu; R.Kalil; T.Moton; G.Olsen; C.Newton; J.Stewart; C.McCaffrey

Defense (8): S.Lotulelei; K.Short; V.Butler; J.Peppers; S.Thompson; L.Kuechly; T.Davis; J.Bradberry

I was only counting 1st round picks (12).  And 1st AND high 2nd round picks (top 45 overall) (16?).

Further analysis can be done and is appreciated-and will NO DOUBT show our draft value is FAR superior to any other team, with no close second.

    • I don't think it was fear of the unknown because he tried to hide the extent of the injuries that made him drop. After the drop, the reports I heard were that teams knew what was wrong with his knee and it was something similar to another athlete from a few years ago (honestly don't remember if it was even a football player).  That it was basically one of those things where he should be fine for a while, there isn't a huge concern of immediate injury risk.   But what he has going on with his knee is something that is degenerative and there's little chance he'll be able to play more than 5 or so years on it before he won't be able to play anymore. So basically it was teams knowing if they draft him, he's probably going to be only a rookie contract player and even if he's great, you might not be able to get use out of him on a second contract.  Which in turn makes the drop make sense, but I'm kinda surprised some contending team didn't take him late in the 1st, hoping he'd put them over the top on a SB run but then not even have to worry about giving him a big contract in 4 years too.
    • Depends if they see the writing on the wall with their roster and contracts and decide to bite the bullet and begin a complete rebuild and roster overhaul.  I have no clue why some franchises (IE us) refuse to do this and keep half assing trying to win 8 games or so.  Do it correctly, take your lumps and build a contender.  We shall see what loomis decides.
    • Each team plays 17 games.  I do not see why they don't just have each team play one international game per year.  Neutral site game, 8 home, 8 away.
