Better rookie season for Christian McCaffrey or Leonard Fournette?

I keep hearing and seeing everywhere from non-panther fans that McCaffrey is so small and he can't be run in between the tackles too many times , these people are acting like he's 5'7'' 160 lbs or something. I know I've made a simular post before, but these people are completely ignoring the fact that there's been a number of great RBs that are pretty damn close to McCaffrey's size, weight, or both at this point in their careers . Keep in mind all these backs are 215 lbs or less.

McCaffrey : 5'11'' 205

Curtis Martin : 5'11 210 (The player Gettleman claimed McCaffrey was most similar to)

Emmitt Smith : 5'9'' 210

Walter Payton : 5'10'' 200

Barry Sanders : 5'8'' 200 (consensus most elusive back of all time)

Ladanian Tomlison : 5'10'' 215

Marshall Faulk : 5'10'' 211 (The player I think he's most similar too)

Lesean McCoy : 5'11'' 210  (The best active player comparison to McCaffrey)

Warrick Dunn : 5'9'' 180

Tiki Barber : 5'10'' 200 (The player NFL.com draft analysis thinks McCaffrey's most similar to)

Brian Westbrook : 5'10' 203

I never understood where it came from, or that smaller stature rb are more prone to injury. There is no correlation to size and injury. NONE. Big backs are just as prone to injury especially if they have a violent style.

It came from his inability to consistently block, also is upper body is weaker than the Running backs listed, he also can not take the hits Jonathan stewart takes. He also does not break tackles when the defender gets both hands on him. He is more elusive than a power RB. He literally relies on his feet rather than any kind of power to gain yards.

HE has looked just as he did at Stanford.

You are contradicting yourself with this statement. You are saying he looks like he did at Stanford but now against the NFL.  I am all in and look for records to be broken just like he did at Stanford.

I'm more concerned about Fournette's long term health than CMC's.  McCaffrey is shifty and knows how to get small before he gets hit.  Fournette is going to get injured with his running style.

See jstew as an example of how this style can cut into the number of games played in a season.

Watching him run between the tackles has been the most exciting thing about him yet.

He's the closest to LeVeon Bell in the league already with his patience and vision and ability to find and hit the holes with he burst he does it with. I'm pumped as much about him as a runner between the tackles as I am with his receiving ability.

You do realize that Reggie Bush and Christian McCaffrey are not the same person? Just because player X did this, doesn't mean player Y will do this.

Keep beating that drum though...RUN CMC gonna prove you wrong and you will just vanish off the face of the Huddle, or create some other dumb alt...either way, get pooped on again.

You are taking this way too personal. CMC does not even know you are alive. You guys act like you are dating the man. LOL You keep getting over hyped about preseason football. CMC will never win a rushing title. CMC is our special scatback who will get no more than 15 touches a game.

What records is he going to break. Please list them here so I can bookmark it.

Thats 1040 rush yards and 640 Rec yards for a total of 1680 yards from scrimmage. And not even counting his KR/PR yardage.

... which would have put him at #4 overall in the entire league last year. Behind only David Johnson, Ezekiel Elliot, and Leveon Bell.

Yay math!

Since you mentioned he looks like he did at Standford, let's go with the All Purpose Yards in single season. Not saying he will do it this year, but if they ever use him like they did at Stanford then he has a good shot.

    • I’m not mad at Moehrig.  He’s great at what he does.  And to be honest, a lot of my favorite safeties in our history were box-first type guys - Maxie, Minter, Mike Mitchell, Chris Harris…  they’re first and foremost objective was to put people on their backs and coverage was secondary.  There is a place for that.  There is a definite need for that.  Physical guys that set the tone.  So cool, we have that in Moerhig. But what we have lacked for the vast majority of our existence is a true free safety that cleans everything up on the back end.  Sometimes they come in the form of a JOAT, like Peppers.  I think he would be a fantastic compliment to Moehrig’s strengths and weaknesses.  If we don’t go after him, I certainly hope Ransom is given the chance to grow and develop in real-time with real game reps, because what he did in preseason was very encouraging to see.  I hope he can grow into that roaming center fielder with a little bit of an edge to him as an enforcer as well.  He has the tools.  In the meantime, adding Peppers would only help.
    • Option 1 is most likely. Even if he kills it this year, it wouldn't be prudent to rush an extension for one good season. If you have to pay him more because you waited another year, then he earned it. And that's OK. Adjust accordingly.
    • Cam had the advantage of having a very strong supporting cast his first 2 seasons. Things definitely worsened later on. But those first couple of years can kill a QB. Some never truly recover. If they do recover it takes years, and usually with another team. Trying to learn to be an NFL QB with TEs and WRs that are trying to learn too is a recipe for disaster. Imagine if Cam's rookie season was that 2014 offensive squad. Changes everything! I said it when they moved up in 2023. This team wasn't ready for a rookie QB yet. Anyone that thinks Stroud would have been a lot better is delusional. The correct formula is to build a strong team and then you go get your rookie QB. Not the other way around. BY is going into his third season and we're still trying to put a respectable group of WRs and TEs around him. I think they have the right personnel now. Unfortunately they haven't developed into actual NFL players yet.  This season we should expect consistency and aggressiveness from BY. Mostly for his development but also to DEVELOP his young cast.
