Joel Corry of CBS says Gano may be cut

Corry doesn't have any inside information. He does articles for CBS based on the financial aspect of the NFL and that is purely what he is basing this on.

Quote

Graham Gano, K, Panthers

  • 2017 salary cap number: $4 million
  • 2017 compensation: $3.25 million
  • 2017 dead money: $800,000
  • 2017 salary cap savings: $3.2 million

Gano making 78.9 percent of his field goal attempts in 2016, which ranked 25th in the NFL, prompted the Panthers to use a seventh-round pick on Harrison Butker. Gano has made three of his four preseason field goal attempts (his lone miss being from 50 yards out) and all five extra points tries, while Butker is 2 for 2 both on field goal and extra point attempts, including a 51-yard field goal. Panthers head coach Ron Rivera called the kicker competition a dead heat heading into the preseason finale against the Steelers, but the financial equation heavily favors Butker. His entire four-year contract is slightly over $700,000 less than Gano's $3.2 million 2017 base salary.

This is nothing more than the same speculation huddlers are making. I wouldn't get your hopes up(or down I guess) based on this.

Everyone can see the obvious.  Hopefully Marty and RR can join the club.

I don't understand why anyone would be happy to see Gano out, I have more faith in our kicking game going into this season with him than I would with an unproven rookie.  Gano has missed big kicks, but he's made big kicks too.  Relying on a rookie kicker going into the year seems very risky, if he starts blowing kicks then we bring someone else in and it turns into one of those bad unsettled K position situations.

If I had faith in Gano, I would be in favor of keeping him no matter the price tag.  The truth is that when he lines up from 45+ out, it's a crapshoot as to whether he'll hit it or not.  If it's 50+, I'm assuming a miss.  Seriously, you can get those numbers from a rookie who's younger and cheaper.  Yeah, it's probably a bigger risk to go with the unproven rookie, but I'll take the unknown over the known, which isn't anything special.  Even if the rookie ends up failing miserably, there is someone out there doing what Gano does for cheaper.

    • Push em to the brink!!! Shut em down Freddie!
    • I tend to look at all of these guys and wonder how committed they are to doing special teams? It's a big deal when you're fighting for roster spots. And we need massive refreshes to all phases of the special teams game. And the idea that four or five of these players could see rotational use outside of special teams would be a win. This team has accumulated quite a bit of dead wood over the last five years and its time to take an axe to some of it. These new fellows have a shot to benefit from that if they can really push. That being said, wow that receivers room is crowded right now. I'm not sure if I was a vet player with more than 2 years experience other than Adam Thielen if I'd be too sure of my future here. Tet is guaranteed a spot, Coker earned his for sure and they aren't done with XL developing yet. That's only two to three spots left for the entire room. It's going to be very competitive and better for Bryce's future, too. Safety and linebacker are the opportunity spots here this season. There's room for the right guy and we may see a starter eventually from one of these UDFAs, either by merit or injury.
    • Aho and Jarvis just gripping it too tight right now. Relax, play their 200 ft game and the shots will start to find the net. Freddie has been excellent and welcome back Mista Svechnikov. Burns.....well, thank goodness for Slavin.
