  1. 1. Panthers finish 10-6, but just miss the playoffs. What do you do with the coaching staff?

    • Bring them all back

    • Fire OC and/or DC

One thing that should be pointed out...

GMs don't generally have a say in the hiring and firing of assistant coaches. Those decisions belong to the head coach.

Yes, the GM can override him, but Rivera is pretty loyal to his guys and thus you have immediate friction.

Bottom Line: It'd be highly unlikely that you could pull off only firing assistants.

You want Shula gone, you're gonna have to fire Rivera.

I find it interesting that most here have made the decision that Wilks is a great DC after 3 games. Some are even ready to make him our next head coach.

Maybe we should tap the brakes a bit until we have a larger sample. Giving good press conferences does not guarantee he is a great coach.

There's a real challenge here, because it's easy to say "Fire Rivera" but harder than it sounds to get someone who would be better.  Look at all the coaches Tampa Bay has gone through, or even Atlanta.  So while I would like to give Ron the boot in favor of someone better I have no faith in my ability to find someone--I actually thought the guy who built the Legion of Boom would be good in the Head Coach seat.

I think I would put Rivera on the spot about Shula and see what he has to say.  If he can honestly point to a lack of talent and sell that, then I'm inclined to work with him on that.  But I doubt that's possible, so I fully expect that I would put RR in a position where he replaces Shula or joins him on the unemployment line.  I would also make it clear that I expect to see more Riverboat and less Ronservative.  And if he goes out and presents me with a Shula clone as a potential replacement, I go early-Hurney on him and get one myself and tell him to make it work.

Most of the love for Wilks is because he talks like a head coach.

I know success as a coordinator is generally what leads to head coach in jobs, but in truth they're very different skill sets. I honestly think position coaching is a closer approximation overall, but very few position coaches skip the coordinator level (notable exception: Andy Reid).

Could Wilks be a great head coach? Unknown.

If you're asking that question about Rivera though, I think we do know that answer.

My ability to find the right guy doesn't worry me.

Marty Hurney's ability to do so worries me a lot.

(not that I think Hurney will fire Rivera anyway)

Hurney found Fox and Rivera.  That can be made to support either side of the argument that he knows what he's doing, of course. :)
