Watching the bears packers game last night  reminded me that Rivera is basically Fox 2.0      Blind loyalty to his vets over more talented younger players.  Stupid personnel decisions.   Poor in game decision making.

Jerry's got a "type" that he likes and that's what we are always going to end up with.

We've had "defensive minded" head coaches who want to run the ball going back to the Capers era. We're heading towards are 25th anniversary and our Won-Lost record for that period is right around .500. After all this time we still haven't had back to back winning seasons.

I don't think this team will ever win on a consistent basis until an offensive minded head coach (or a defensive one who believes in putting as many points on the board as possible) is hired. The team can't keep bringing in the same type of coach with each hire and expect things to be different. It's way past time to try something new.

Exactly this. JR is the MAIN reason why we STILL do not have back to back winning seasons. Getting these type of coaches + family environment + content = mediocrity.

That's why I keep telling people, it doesn't matter whether we fire Rivera or not, JR will just find another one just like him and we can continue on with our mediocrity. Rinse and repeat until we get new ownership.

Unfortunately, I think you're exactly right.  I can imagine a former player (JR & RR) hearkening back to the days when they were the older guys on the squad, and how it felt to see the young bucs trying to take their spot.  I think this is part of the reason why they like to hang onto people past their prime and why we are a mediocre franchise.

I suggested the same thing on this very board right after the Saints game. I don't think there was a response, but I'm glad there is at least one more person in the Panther Nation who thinks this is something that should at least be considered or experimented with in certain situations.

He was a backup RT for 1 year in college but other than that I don't know that he has ever played there.

I still can't believe this is the same guy that beat out Tyron Smith for the starting LT spot at USC.

I really wonder about this as well. Matt was considered a blue chip, can't miss type prospect in the draft.

So what happened?

He was a pro bowler as a rookie LT! That’s insane. Rookie OTs never adjust that quickly. It is baffling.

Now I’ve heard whispers that he’s lazy, doesn’t really give a damn and doesn’t love football which could account for it but I don’t know for certain and he had to work hard and care at some point to achieve the success he had. You don’t beat out Ty Smith and make the pro bowl as a rookie OT being lazy and coasting on natural talent. If it was true I had hoped Ryan’s presence would solve that issue but here we are.

There have been a TON of highly drafted OL busts in recent years. OL used to be considered about the safest 1st round pick you could make. These days it seems to be about the riskiest.

As a Vikings fan, I can't tell you how happy us Vikings fans are to be rid of Kalil. His first year showed so much promise. However, he never seemed to have a passion for the game. Once paid, he seems like so many other players that try to coast on talent, not effort/heart. And he has difficulty taking criticism. Once fans start getting on him, he will melt down. He says a lot of the right stuff, but none of it ever bears out for more than a game or two. I was very interested to see how he turned out for you guys, because in the back of our minds we wondered if it was actually our coaching staff. Apparently not. I can't tell you how much better our O Line has been this year with an average Reiff playing LT thank Kalil. Hopefully he won't get Newton killed for you all. GLTY
