"No one can cover Christian McCaffrey 1 on 1"

Yep. He could be a HUGE part of a superbowl team, but not THE part. We have learned early that force feeding CMC is a recipe for losing. Cam seriously needs to do a better job at spreading the ball around like in 2015. He missed CMC on a LOT of open underneath routes and instead launched it to a double covered WR.

Yessir, if only we had that 2015 offensive line :liar:. It became apparent to the coaches that Cam needed a guy like McCaffrey to handle the underneath stuff. New England has proven that you need a guy like Welker/Woodhead/Edelman to help you win a championship. We got one, but paid a premium to get him with the 8th pick. But honestly, who else could we have gotten that could contribute immediately? We picked the right guy, just too early.

We are missing Olsen badly, his ability to constantly draws LBs and safety will create space for CMC to work with

Greg Olsen will change all of the CMC negative poo .

Until we have a TE  that constantly draws a LB or safety  CMC is going to struggle with the underneath stuff with crowded defense.

Maybe, but I think the disappointment here is CMC as a RB and his inability to break tackles at-least the first tackle

That's just sound fundamentals in tackling. I've realized one thing watching the NFL for so long. Don't expect any player to ever just dominate without a good system. A large part of why we went 15-1 was because of a system and the reason we can't now score is a system.

with the way the draft ended up Lattimore was the best option. Very few people predicted he would fall out of the top 10.

Also you don't need a scat back/ white guy to win a SB lol. The falcons should've won that last year and don't have one. Broncos the year before didn't have one. Seattle didn't before that and was one handoff away. Not sure why you think teams have to have one just bc NE does. NE keeps getting to the SB bc of brady and bellicheat.

Oh and I would argue we got the wrong guy too, as alvin kamara is just absolutely shitting on CMC rn. Would've rather had him at 8 tbh. Tarik cohen looks better too.

CMC has been a huge disappointment so far

It’s gonna take a year of conditioning to get his strength up 2 NFL caliber. The other issue is that he really doesn’t have that much space to work with.

We should just focus on using him as a receiver as of now.

Preface: I am a big CMC supporter.

But....

As of now he just does not look like a value whatsoever at pick 8 in the draft.

Example:

giphy.gif

This is as close to a 1 on 1 drill in the running game as you will ever get. The Bucs safety is playing man on CMC, motions with him the entire pre-snap.

CMC HAS to be able to get by his man and cut it to the outside where he has blockers. He only had to beat the safety.  If he did, it would have been the longest run so far for him, possibly a TD.

Unfortunately, CMC has rarely (if ever) been able to get past any first contact at all.

The 8th pick in the draft should be able to do this, without question. If the Panthers were looking for a receiving back who cannot get past anyone they already had one on the roster named Fozzy. So far, that draft pick is looking mighty suspect with such glaring weaknesses elsewhere on the roster.

1 on 1?  First the DE busts through the line (due to poor blocking) forcing CMC to cut even further outside to avoid a tackle for a loss.  By the time he gets outside, the safety is in a great position.  CMC can only do so much to make him miss, as cutting back to the inside will bring the DE back into play.  In the end, there are 3 Bucs around him.

It was well played by the defense, and a poor play design by Shula.  Why run CMC outside and have only one blocker leading/pulling?  Makes zero sense.

On the bright side, CMC performed very well in the passing game again.  He was wide open for another 3-4 easy completions for 10+ yard gains on plays where Cam instead threw it deep.  CMC beat David easily almost every time he ran a route.

And this is why many wanted Cook to be a RB, CMC as WR. But at this point what's done is done. I think the lack of Samuel is more concerning and should be discussed more. He was a high 2nd round pick and we need someone to stretch the field. We should have be able to get him in one on one matchups down the field. Cam deep throws need to be more man on man, a lot of double coverage this year.

Let's play a game:

Has CMC been a gamebreaker thus far? No.

Has CMC gotten many chances in space? No.

Do we blame Cam for the ineptitude of the offense? No.

Have we seen an evolution of this offense? No.

Do we all blame Shula for the offensive woes? Yes.

So, how can we give Cam a pass and not give CMC one? Stew who breaks a ton of tackles isn't doing much better. Our evolved offense is predictable. Teams know when we will run or pass due to our personnel.

We utilize big receivers for deep throws. We utilize big backs for outside runs. We utilize small backs for inside runs. We utilize guys who aren't agile for screen passes.

So what I am saying is that this is going to be the CMC that we are going to see as long as we run the offense we are running.

Also if I were to say after the draft that CMC would have 1300 total yrds from scrimmage as a rookie, would you be happy or upset by the pick?

(warning Nerd Alert!)

Here's some interesting NextGen stats from Football Outsiders.

CMC has 20 broken tackes (6 on runs, 14 on passes).

His broken tackle rate (broken tackles per touch) of 22.5% is actually better than Fournette's 21.99%. The big difference being most of LF (27 run/5 pass) come on runs where most of CMC's come on passes.

CMC only 6 broken tackles on run plays. This equals Gillislee, Tolbert, Mack (Colts), Gore, Rob Kelly (Skins), and Lacy. It's more than Tevin Coleman or Gio Bernard.
