Panthers wide receivers from a college standpoint

If Cam continues to produce with ragtag group it’s truly a miracle. Imagine the day this team actually dedicates resources to get some legit receivers

Funchess - was a TE until his last year at Michigan, his career high was under 750 yards in a season

Shepard - Had more rushing yards than receiving yards at LSU, was a dual threat QB in HS and was recruited as a QB

Samuel - Also had more rushing yards than receiving, his career high was around 800 yards, mostly swing and screen passes

Clay - Mainly used as a returner at Utah.

Byrd - situational deep threat who never had more than 600 yards receiving

Bersin was actually the most productive college receiver

I don’t think this organization will ever properly address the position.

With that said, they’ll have ANOTHER golden opportunity this offseason when the 2014 draft class become FA’s (minus 1st rounder who have had their options picked up).

Just give me Dante Pettis in the draft please.

Lol sorry, but that's completely false and probably the worst take I've seen yet.

Curtis Samuel is nothing of what you said.

Curtis Samuel is a WR who can play RB - not the other way around. Per Pro Football Focus, Samuel had 220 snaps from the backfield, much less than his 425 snaps from the slot. He's more experienced as a wide-receiver than as runningback.

So yes, Curtis Samuel is indeed a better receiver than a rusher. In fact, it could be argued he's the class' best route runner.

During his Junior year, Samuel accumulated 865 yards and seven touchdowns on 74 receptions, averaging 11.7 yards per reception. He ranked second in the conference in all three metrics, and was named a member of the first-team All-Big Ten as a wide receiver. Curtis Samuel is the only player in Ohio State history to finish with 1,000+ yards rushing and 1,000+ yards receiving.

But tell me more about how he's a runningback playing wide receiver. Just as bad as saying Cam Newton's a runningback playing quarterback.

Here's my twitter thread where I go over eight games from Curtis Samuel available on the internet.

With hands like a running back.

Samuel had 1286 rushing yards on  a 172 attempts, he  had 1249 receiving yards on 107 catches

How am I wrong again?

And if you think he was this class best route runner, you know nothing about to football.

If we could grab a solid receiver in the 3rd or 4th round I'd be ecstatic. Not gonna happen with Hurndog drafting though. I think we have greater needs in the 1st and 2nd like safety and O-line. I guess it all depends on how the draft plays out though.

Screw the draft we need a bonafied free agent wide receiver. Someone like Desean Jackson or Sammy Watkins

Um because he had more snaps from the slot than the backfield.

how is that hard to comprehend?

And there’s plenty of analysts who agree that Curtis may be the best route runner. Matt Waldman, Josh Norris, and plenty other draft analysts rave on him.

This. We have enough youngsters to develop. If we add another WR, I'd greatly prefer a vet. An actual WR vet, not a career special teamer. We paid Shepard to be something that he simply isn't.

Where did I say he was better rb than receiver? I’m just stating the facts.

And I can find draft expert after expert saying he’s not even a top 5 route runner in this class, guys like Juju, Kupp and Zay Jones were leagues ahead of him.

Samuel was (is) raw as hell as a WR. He was a jack of all trades player in college. Saca is out of his mind on this one.

Yep, his route tree at OSU 90% of the time was screen, swing pass or drag. That’s like saying Tavon Austin is an elite route runner

    • Wanted to jump into this thread. Although I do not post anymore I do look in as there are a few old friends around. Loved hearing some of the names you mentioned.  Another  oldie is NanceUSMC.  He is the one who got me here from the old Observer forum.  Good guy and smart football guy. I have learned a lot from a lot of good Huddlers over the years, Over time. we have sadly lost a few who left this earth too soon.  Anyone who know of someone, it would be nice to try to make a list.  One of the more recent, CosmoGirl,  was someone that kind of hit hard.  Life sucks sometimes. Some of the best times were when we had our own tailgate and could meet up in person.  I think it made us better. Several dedicated volunteers, lead by LiverMush, started setting things up in the wee hours of each gameday morning.  Don't know all those regulars but I remember JakeFlake was one.  For you newbies...each game,  a Huddler (or a group) sponsored the food for each tailgate.  Eating was free but a donation was asked for.  At the end of the year those donations were used to buy bicycles for Toys for Tots.  Over the years Huddlers bought a lot of new bikes for kids for Christmas.  (I am guessing a couple of hundred each year.)  We had a good time getting together, got to make friends in person, and then got to feel like you were doing something good. It was truly a community. I got to meet Dan Morgan at one of our tailgates...he brought pizza from his restaurant.  How many of you remember that?  Glad the restaurant did not make it....lol. Not only have people changed, and come and gone.....but the entire nature and purpose has changed. Nothing lasts forever and we move on but we still like to think about good times. Same reason we take pictures. Want to ask a question I have not seen anyone else mention......who remembers    "The Couch" ?  We have argued, laughed, lived the ups and downs of football and dealt with a little real life along the way.  A thanks to  the Mods who keep this going.  I am sure they sacrifice a lot of their time out of love for the forum and the Panthers. Take care my friends and be well.  I will close with my new favorite quote which I think is greatly needed in these difficult times.
    • My top-5 JAGS: 1. Tommy Tremble: May not ever be top-tier, but has been solid and you never doubt the effort. 2. Cade Mays: Not bad for a 6th rounder. Hated to see him go. 3. Brady Christensen: One of the most versatile backup OLs in the NFL. Hopefully we re-sign him. 4. Trevis Gipson: Quietly was really solid depth last season. Glad we brought him back. 5. Brycen Tremayne: Has been solid depth at WR, flashing at times last year.
    • He wasn't a JAG, he's been a starter every year of his career. Didn't turn into the superstar it seemed like he might his rookie year, but I think part of that has been being misused. Guy was/is a baller.
