I'm of the opinion Wilks is a great positional coach, above average DC, but has definite HC qualities.  It's why he's been on short lists even before becoming a coordinator and if he interviews well, could very well land a gig.  I don't think Indy or NYG are fits but the Bengals are an interesting team.  If Marvin Lewis is involved in the FO, I think he could very well target Wilks.

If Houston replaces O'Brien than they are making a big mistake.  That team was on a roll until Watson went down.  They were looking like a team that had it all.  Even after losing Watts and his partner.

Catching up...

Giants: Fired Ben McAdoo; requested interviews with Josh McDaniels, Matt Patricia

Colts: Fired Chuck Pagano; expected to interview Josh McDaniels, Matt Nagy, Dave Toub

Raiders: Fired Jack Del Rio; expected to hire Jon Gruden

Lions: Fired Jim Caldwell; requested interviews with Steve Wilks, Mike Vrabel; may be targeting Matt Patricia

Bears: Fired John Fox

Still Uncertain...

Bengals: Marvin Lewis' contract is expired

Cardinals: There's talk of Bruce Arians retiring

Broncos: Expected to fire Vance Joseph but may be reconsidering

Titans: keeping Mike Mularkey for now at least since they made the playoffs

Texans: Coach Bill O'Brien and GM Rick Smith reported to be in a power struggle, but Smith is now taking leave to care for an ailing wife

Browns: Owner has told Hue Jackson (who's won one game in two seasons) that he's safe, but GM John Dorsey seems to want him gone; Jackson reportedly thinks he's done a great job

Related Note: The Giants request to interview Matt Patricia is interesting in that they had stated a preference for someone with head coaching experience, but John Mara did also say that they would at least consider a longtime coordinator. Patricia fits that mold.

None of the candidates mentioned so far meets the Rooney Rule.

Word that the Lions have now formally requested to interview Matt Patricia as well as Vikings offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur.

Forgot about Pat Shurmur....

I think I'd rather have him as OC than HC but then again Shula is easy to upgrade.

The narrative on him has changed a lot because of Hue Jackson.

Before it was like "well he only won nine games in Cleveland". Now it's like ""wow he actually managed to win nine games in Cleveland".

    • Just another 1st round QB that never paid off for the team that drafted them or traded for them. It's been like this since the SB began. 36 QBs have now won the SB & only 13 of them have been 1st rounders winning with their original team. Namath 1968, Griese 1972, Bradshaw 1974, McMahon 1985, Simms 1986, Aikman 1992, Elway 1997, Roethlisberger 2005, P.Manning 2006, E.Manning 2007, Rodgers 2010, Flacco 2012, & Mahomes 2019. Only 3 have taken longer than 5 seasons as the starter to win a SB.  4  6  5  4  6  4  15  2  9  4  3  5  2 [the years it takes for these 1st round QBs] 5  1  4  1  3  1  1  2  3  4  [10 of the 36 have won a chip with their 1st team that haven't been drafted in the 1st round. These are the years it took them as a starter] What stands out? Only 2 of these QBs have lost their first championship appearance. Elway took 4 years as a 1st rounder & Hurts took 2 years as a 2nd rounder. Of the 10 non-1st round QBs, 2 are 2nd rounders, 3 are 3rd rounders, 5 are 6th rounders or later. Please stop wasting time on drafting 1st round QBs with such a high failure rate. The remaining 13 QBs are traded or free agent signings. Stafford, Favre, Young, Williams and Dawson are the 5 trades. Peyton Manning & Tom Brady also won for teams as free agents on a short stay as well as being drafted. The lesson here is don't waste your franchise on farming up 1st rounders for the league, and steer clear of trading for a franchise QB. Stick to finding that championship QB by drafting them outside of the 1st round or through free agency.
    • I lost most of the respect I had for Fox in 2010. He should have resigned if he hated the job that much. Instead he stuck for his paycheck and let stuff go to hell.    I burned out on Ron too but my deal breaker issue with him was away from football and after he was gone from the Panthers. He may have been out of his depth but never quit on us.
    • From where they were one year ago to now, pretty incredible. I mean, say what you want about Vrabel he is no Jerrod Mayo.
