Figures..  We're stuck

Not really.

New owner could still decide to fire him. They may not be so staunchly against buying out coaching contracts as Jerry Richardson is.

And I do think Riot is correct that this is probably a response the Chicago rumors.

Sucks the new owner/GM(?) won’t have a say in Rivera’s extension.

One last gasp of this mediocre era in Panthers history I suppose.

Nothing about this prevents them from firing him if they want to.

It makes it more expensive, but if they've got the money to buy an NFL team, they probably aren't worried about paying a little extra to fire a coach.

The new ownership is probably a big part of the reason its happening.  Either they are already in place, and tacitly approve, or the current managements wants to ensure that Ron is taken care of if the new management decides to move on.  Or some combination thereof.

This probably explains the Ron is going to leave rumors as well.  Might be a negotiating tactic on Ron's part.

Disagree. I think this is all Marty and Jerry.

This is JR making sure he gets paid before he leaves. New Owner/GM can clean house...

I agree. And it wouldn't surprise me to see him do the same thing with Hurney.

Notice how much easier it is to spend money when you know you're not going to be the one paying for it?

I don’t know why people bag on 2014 so much. Yes, we were 7-8-1, but we finished 5-2 with a playoff win and a 14 playoff loss at Seattle that was due to a 14 point swing on that 90 yard pick 6. Do people forget the car crash and Cam lying on the road or that our OL was in shambles until we started Norwell, Turner and Remmers?

If you’re a fan you realize the run at the end of 2014/OL changes are a big part of the 2015 run.

Darn I thought I was a fan.  But according to your definition, I guess I don't qualify.  Guess I will just revoke my fan card.

I watched the whole friggin season and have since 1996.  Like I said previously, would Rivera still be employed by NYG, NE or Pitt?  I have my opinion.  I guess we will just have to agree to disagree on this, but this doesn't make me any less of a fan my friend.  Just a fan with a different opinion.  One that you disagree with.

Well deserved. In the NFL head coaching hierarchy, I'd put him on the second highest tier. Below the gold standard that includes Belichick (who is honestly in a class of his own), Harbaugh, and Tomlin. He's right there with guys like Carroll, Payton, McCarthy and Zimmer.

Simply put, who deserves a contract extension if Rivera doesn't?  We have made the playoffs 4 out of the last 5 years.  We have won the division 3 out of the last 5 years.  We made the divisional round of the playoffs 3 years in a row (plus have a chance this year).  And won a NFC Championship and made a SB in arguably the best division in all of the NFL.

Other than Belichick, Pete Caroll, or maybe Mike Tomlin, I don't know who you could make an argument for being a better coach over the last 5 years.

This argument might not stand up well in another 5 years, but right now Rivera is unquestionably a top 10 coach, and you could make a solid argument he is a top 5 coach.

I realize expectations change over time, but if you would have told me in the dark days of 2010 we were going to get a coach that would produce like Rivera has in a division that had Brees & Ryan, I would be utterly ecstatic.

The ultimate goal of every organization is to win a SB and then multiple SB's, and as fans we want the same thing.  However, at some point you have to take enjoyment in accomplishments along the way b/c 31 of 32 teams are going to be disappointed in some fashion every year.

The Panthers have produced the most exciting 5 year span in our history over the past 5 years.  And Rivera is as integral to that as anyone.  The man deserves the financial compensation and security that should come with that.
