The Summer of Norv Turner

Someone posted a link to an SI article which contained this video buried in one of the thousand Norv Turner threads created in the past 24 hours.

I suggest you all watch it, it’s pretty interesting and shows the amount of respect that he commands. Released this past November, and it’s got Philip Rivers, Jim Harbaugh, Jason Garrett, Sean McVay all chatting with Norv and just appreciating the offensive mind that he is. He even name dropped Ron and Carolina during the sit-down with Harbaugh.

Assuming he’s the guy, we should all take solace in the fact that he is well respected in league circles, has made his mark on the league as an offensive mind, and is not Mike Shula.

This is a guy that can really help Cam out.

Sorry I didn’t have fifteen links to GIFs of someone else’s Twitter analysis.

He's going to take this offense to the next level. Anyone who can't see this is a massive upgrade over Shula-ball needs their head examined.

People bring up his last 2 jobs. The Vikings with who, Tavaris Jackson at QB? The Browns with God knows who at QB?

I think everyone will be very happy with the results.

Norv said it would take a special situation to get him back into coaching....well here we go. Not everyday that Cam Newton in his prime come available to lead.

If he’s going to run basically the same crap Mike ran then how is this an upgrade? From everything I have read Ron doesn’t want a huge change in the offensive game plan, he just wants more consistency.

Which I interpret as this team will still pound the rock, but when Cam does throw it Ron wants the ball to be caught at a higher %.

For the thousandth time- Shula’s scheme wasn’t terribly awful- his situational awareness and instruction during the week was awful. The reason he’s never sniffed a HC interview despite being a playoff team 4 of the last 5 years.

Norv pretty much wrote a thesis on the book that Chud and Shula attempted to implement.

If the offense becomes more consistent, isn't that a pretty big upgrade in itself?

As always, if he ends up being the guy, time will tell.  I'm just glad to see the organization making proactive changes.

Everyone on this board is assuming that Norv will actually take the OC job if Rivera offers it.  I wouldn't be too sure about that.  Any job interview I was ever on went two ways.  not only was the employer interviewing me, but I was interviewing the employer so I could get a feel for them and the job - see if I really wanted to work there regardless of what the pay was.  This video says to me that NT is pretty comfortable in his so far retirement from coaching.  Why would he want to come here in the middle of what is going to possibly be a major clusterfug in the coming months ?  And don't tell me it would be just so he can coach Cam.  That doesn't cut it.

Good point, but I think it’s widely assumed Ron wouldn’t have canned Shula had he not gotten a verbal from Norv.

Nice video find @mjligon.  Good to see the amount of respect Turner still has, despite whatever happened in Minn.

A couple things:  that stood out to me:  Mentioning Rivera and Carolina, talking about doing a few things really well, and common sense football.  We need that kind of mindset here.  And I think it would work out with Cam.

I agree though that Turner looks pretty content in this video.  How much "fire" does he have to come back?  What happens if things go sideways here?

Interesting indeed.

I had not thought about that angle.  But if true why put on a charade of interviews and bringing in candidates ?  It makes no more sense than Rivera   " waking up at 3 am and realizing he had to make a change ".

It’s Ron. There is no telling what goes on in that man’s head sometimes.
