Washington officially named Defensive Coordinator

Mr. Scot

I worry sometimes about all these promotions instead of looking for people outside the organization. Are we getting the best candidates or the one's were most comfortable with?? Not saying he will fail and obviously I don't won't him to being a Panthers fan, but it's worth noting.

With all that said I think we'll always trot out a formidable defense as long as Rivera is here.

I'd be more worried on the offensive side if that were happening (like it did with Shula after Chud...). Defense should be fine as long as Rivera's here.

In most companies of the world you promote within first if there person is deserving, typically because the alternative leaves you without many quality people that want to work for you since they see you dont give a rats ass about the work they put in. Besides either Washington or Holcolm was getting poached.

You are right to be concerned.

The concern should be within the struggles Rivera has had philosophically that translate to his staff. It isn't an issue with Washington. It's an issue with the status quo Rivera has been all too willing to lean on when tough decisions need to be made.

If you want the ugly no homer glasses truth. We're promoting within from a staff that if it weren't for Cam Newton heroics, would have led the team to having a second losing season in a row. We're all cheering and giving high fives. But what did we really accomplish in 2017? We backed into the playoffs by barely beating the Bucs of all teams after losing to the Saints 3 times in one season. And our vaunted defense was exposed by even average/mediocre quarterbacks.

We should be exploring options right now instead of just accepting and blindly filling positions with whoever we can find on hand at the time. The Turner hire, though disappointing in that Ron explored no other options at all, is regardless a step in the right direction because Shula wasn't the right guy for the job. Let's be honest though, Shula should have been gone a year ago, and that's the sort of thing from Ron that I'm talking about. But these other positions shouldn't be so casually disregarded.

One other note as to why Holcomb is likely to get the Cardinals DC job...

Washington might well have been Wilks first choice, but he's under contract. Holcomb isn't.

It's possible Holcomb may have been waiting to see what Wilks did before deciding whether to re-up.

It's all on Rivera

    • I agree but he honestly has gotten better about this. Used to be he’d do it like 4-5 times a game, now it’s like 2-3. Overall I’m incredibly happy with his game, his D has been solid and when he is playing his role he’s a solid scorer and one of the few guys who can consistently finish at the rim and provide that threat. Plus he’s electric and LaMelo loves him. Going into the season I was sure he would just be a stop gap here but now I’m reconsidering and could see him continue to be a “core” piece here. Obviously not on the level of the other starters but he is an important cog for this team. We felt his missed presence during his and Moose’s suspensions.
    • Philly will be a bigger challenge than the Knicks were IMO. George and Embiid are back, not sure about Maxey but Embiid alone is a nightmare matchup for us and Moose. We’ve never really done well against him. Celtics added Tatum but honestly not sure they’re all that much better with him right now than they were when we whooped them a few weeks ago. We should be able to at the very least split these 2, hopefully take both.
