Possible GM Candidates

Tina Becker being in on it is likely just a rubber stamp for Richardson.

If Ron Rivera is part of it, and I expect he will be, we know from his own words that he'll favor Hurney (and it's not like Rivera makes the greatest decisions when it comes to hiring people anyway).

I'd take the process a lot more seriously if it involved someone from outside the organization, but that's not likely.

I'm hopeful that an actual qualified candidate is selected, but I can't help feeling like this is all just a show and we'll wind up with Hurney in the end.

Prove me wrong, Panthers.

Bright side is it's not for long.

Hurney probably ain't going to make the cut, guys.  It appears that "interim" really meant interim.

If the people making the decision were people I trusted to make the right decision, I'd agree with you.

A committee led by Tina Becker, probably including Ron Rivera? Not so much.

Why it might be happening now...

The search begins at a time when the team is for sale, which means that whoever gets the job may not have it for long. The pending sale would seem to justify keeping Hurney on an interim basis until the sale is finalized; it’s possible, however, that the Fritz Pollard Alliance has pushed the NFL and the Panthers to finally open the process and interview a minority candidate for the job.

In which case, yeah it's probably a sham

I don’t understand why Hurney is even part of the process. He screwed this team once and was fired, was re-hired I thought as a stop-gap. Dude needs to fulfill his obligation and move on...

Because the only owner in the NFL who actually thinks Marty Hurney can be a good general manager is, for the moment, still in charge of the Panthers.

This situation of finding a "new" GM is rather reminiscent of another ill conceived vetting process...

In July 2000, after serving as the head of then-Texas Governor George W. Bush's vice presidential search committee, Dick Cheney was announced as the Republican vice presidential nominee.

Here's the committee, per Joe Person (link)

Chief operating officer Tina Becker will lead the search, with assistance from Drummond, head coach Ron Rivera and Panthers associate general counsel Steve Argeris.

So the new GM will be chosen by Jerry Richardson's appointed surrogate, Jerry Richardson's spokesman, one of the lawyers who helped craft Jerry Richardson's non-disclosure agreements, and Ron Rivera.

Gee, I wonder who they're going to pick.

Anyone associated with Beane and Gettledog I would welcome in place of Hurney. They should just make Hurney what he already is...a mascot GM. Bring in Cowden to make the football decisions. Let Hurney have some cushy FO position where he's given a box of Bojangles, a Diet Coke, and 500k salary to live on and get out of the way of the adults in the room.

Take a look at that list and what do you notice?

Three people that fall under the legal or business side of the operation, and one football person who'll basically have a say in hiring his own boss.

Other teams have either hired outside consultants or had actual football people making these decisions, but in true Jerry Richardson fashion the Panthers are going to hand a crucially important job over to people who aren't qualified to do it.

Times like this I question why I even cheer for this team.
