It's not convoluted at all. You're trying to make it that way in an effort to muddy the waters, but it really isn't.

- We were losing (1-5 if I remember right)

- Because we were losing, Richardson wanted to fire Rivera

- Because he didn't want to see Rivera get fired, but realizing that somebody needed to be held publicly accountable, Hurney volunteered to take the axe instead

- Richardson didn't really want to let Marty go, but ultimately agreed to his request

Nothing whatsoever convoluted about that. It's simple, believable and very easy to understand.

More likely scenario....Ron gets called by JR and told that he should be winning more. Ron points out that Hurney can make great Top Ten picks, but after that he bites, and you can't make chicken salad out of chicken sh1t. JR realizes the truth and cans Hurney.

That jibes with what I member. JR asked Hurndog why we weren't winning. Hurndog said he didn't know. So JR fired him. That's the story I'm going with.

I surely do appreciate the gesture. The wife is also good with gestures. Unfortunately for me, they are mostly of the empty variety. lol

I was referring to the post you quoted.  I was about to respond to his bold statement but you beat me to it.   You got this.

That was never actually the official story (there was, in fact, no official story put forth  outside of that Hurney was fired) but that story got leaked from somewhere and had been generally accepted up to now.

Newton and Voth are now saying instead that Hurney took one for the team to protect Rivera. And knowing how the Panthers have operated for years, nobody should be shocked to find there are some false narratives out there.

Not all that surprising if certain things start becoming "declassified" with Richardson on the outs. I won't be shocked if we start hearing lots of other previously unknown stories in the days ahead.

Sorry, but I'm with p55 on this. The Hurney falling on the axe scenario fails the logic test no matter what is being reported now.

If Hurney quit to protect Rivera (which makes no sense for starters) why has Rivera continued as coach through good times and bad?

Additionally, we have direct quotes from JR that he doesn't like paying 2 head coaches at the same time (why he didn't fire Fox) but now we should believe he changed his stripes just a couple of years later?

I'm not buying this. JR may be irrational, but he has generally been consistent in his approach re. coaches.
