News on GM search, team sale could come this week

I honestly don't think they care. JR is making this call from behind the curtain and Hurney is going to be the guy. Obviously they expanded their "search" and included several Rooney Rule box checkers in an effort to save some face, but honestly, I don't think anyone in that front office has any power in this situation anyway.

I find it odd Rivera would be a willing party to this.

Especially given that one of the interviewees - the one who's arguably the true best candidate - is an old colleague of his.

That said, Rivera has already stated that he believes Marty Hurney should keep the job.  And even if he were willing to be fair and objective, he's only one of four and the other three are all loyal to Jerry Richardson.

What it kinda reminds me of is back when we were looking for an offensive coordinator.  Rivera had an old colleague interviewing for that job too (Pat Shurmur) but for the sake of "continuity" he instead went with Mike Shula.

That sure turned out great, huh?

Would be a wicked shame if he repeated that same mistake, but pretty much everyone believes that's exactly what's gonna happen.

You don't think that Jerry Richardson's appointed surrogate, the PR guy who's tried to keep a positive spin on Richardson's image and a lawyer who probably helped write Richardson's non-disclosure agreements can be objective about Richardson's most favored and loyal employee?

Such cynicism

Were it not for creepy old JR, Hurney wouldn't sniff a GM position on any team. So with JR on his way out, why is Hurney even being considered?

We need a new era of Panthers football, not the family façade of mind-numbing mediocrity set up by JR and implemented for years under Hurney.

Because "on his way out" means he's still technically "in".

Richardson is looking to ensure that his most loyal employee either gets entrenched so that new ownership will keep him or at the very least gets one last big paycheck because even Richardson seems to realize nobody else is ever giving Hurney a GM job.

He might also feel that Hurney will keep the team honoring the legacy that he believes he has.

I seriously doubt the guy who pays the salaries for every board member doesn't retain a significant amount of influence in the GM selection process.

We know JR values relationships over ability when it comes to the Panthers organization.

Most, if not all, these board members will likely be out of a job by the start of the 2018 regular season.  Piss off JR with this selection and don't expect to get a great letter of reference from him in a few months.

Don’t know for certain about this but if the NFL is still investigating JR after the sale there really isn’t anything they can do to someone who isn’t involved with the NFL...

True, but that doesn't mean the Panthers organization couldn't be held accountable in some way for JRs behavior.

JR is still not out of the woods.

Sexually harassing employees or discriminating based on race is a violation of law.  I wouldn't be surprised if to see government agencies and former employees going after JR, especially if the NFL investigation validates any of these claims.

Who ever we get wont be as good as gettleman was

I maintain he was a far sight better than Hurney, but there is still room for improvement with our next GM.  Hopefully the new GM is in place within the next few weeks and not named Hurney.  Otherwise, we'll have to hope for a fresh set of eyes from new ownership.

Gettleman is hands down a top 5 gm and we let him walk for free . No one evaluates players like him or can turn no name players into stars like him .

I'm looking forward seeing what he does as the Giants GM.  It should help to clear up a lot of claims on this board one way or the other.

As far as Marty goes, he had over a decade to make his mark on the Panthers.  The choices he made resulted in four straight losing seasons at the end of his tenure.   Hurney was given ample opportunity to demonstrate his abilities as GM and failed miserably.  It is long past time to move on from the MH/JR love affair.

Let's give someone with a stronger resume than "sports reporter" the opportunity to lead this organization.
