First round "light" on top picks?

I stopped reading at "former Browns GM"

Hey, he drafted Joe Thomas.

If there's one thing reading this board has taught me, it's that drafting one or two great players is enough to make you a good GM regardless of how the rest of your performance goes.

Just because the draft is light on top talent doesn't mean there won't be value in the later rounds.  Some of the later rounds can actually be better.

For example:

75 players - 20 1st round grades, 35 second round grades, 20 3rd round grades

75 players - 25 1st round grades, 25 second round grades, 25 3rd round grades

People need to stop thinking in terms of ranking but instead grades.

I think there will be some good value in round 2-4 with both guards and RBs, two positions we could use.  Also there are some tempting WR prospects in that range.  All positons of need, we would be stupid to give up those picks just to move up in the first.

If I look at all of our needs and the draft as a whole I'm starting to lean CB, Safety, or DE in the first just because I feel like we can find a guard, RB, and maybe a WR in rounds 2-3.  I really don't count on starters after the third.

Chubb the only DE above us that can start in a 43 D?

Which OL?  Which Safety?

Great questions.  I should have been more clear.  I think the trade up for DE could be like we did for D. Hall last year---moving up in the third to grab Sweat.  Maybe we could move up in the second for Hubbard or Key. The OL--I think we are going to draft the LG replacement, maybe one that can switch over to C.  In the second round, we could move up for Price or Daniels.  Safety: If Derwin falls to 18 or so, try to offer a third to move up.

Got it

If I were going to move up

I would probably take Will Hernandez in the 1st

Trade up for Hubbard as you say in the 2nd

And take Kyzir White with my one 3rd rounder

Still leaves a lot of holes to fill at ILB, OLB, WR, TE, QB, RB, etc.  FA can get a few of them and maybe there will be a good RB in the 5th, anyway, fun to surmise

When the experts collect data, interview, measure, weigh, test, watch film, etc. candidates for months--bring them in for visits, etc.  You would expect the first rounders would all be successful.  I think their bust rate is about 40%.

This draft does not have the elite talent.  I would trade back if Derwin James or Calvin Ridley is not on the board.

    • That depends on where he's at because if you look at his first 3 seasons before he got sick he had 49 rec as a rookie followed by 56 and then his pro bowl season he had 103 rec. If he's somewhere between seasons 2 and 3 then that wouldn't be bad at all. We'll have to wait and see but from the few clips I've seen and the comments I've heard and read I wouldn't be surprised if that is the case. Personally, I'm really pulling for him and I think he's going to be the comeback player of the year.
    • More praise of Renfrow from Tim Weaver (formerly of USA Today's Panthers Wire, now SI.com), and also what I told some of you, my Huddle friends, from the start: keep it all in perspective, and don't conveniently---and perhaps unfairly, discount and label Renfrow as a JAG when it was a very debilitating illness affecting his play.    "It's understandable to be skeptical about Renfrow's abilities at this late point in his career. After all, he missed all of last season due to a bout of ulcerative colitis that also took a serious toll on his production in 2022 and 2023."   When Renfrow is healthy, he's an above average guy. Being 29 may hurt or help his chances depending upon perspective, but 29 for receivers generally means that there's still (sometimes plenty) gas in the tank. Renfrow also obviously has plenty of motivation and has come with his game face.   "Then agan, seeing is believing and by all accounts Renfrow has been very impressive since joining the Panthers a few months ago... Where Renfrow will fit in Carolina's new-look receiver corps remains to be seen, but at this rate it's going to be hard to exclude him from the initial 53-man roster." https://www.si.com/nfl/panthers/hunter-renfrow-sick-route-panthers-training-camp Read the room, ladies and gentlemen. And don't get it twisted; Renfrow isn't the most talented receiver on the team, but we have seen his ceiling, when healthy, in a Raiders offense that wasn't necessary replete with talent. Consider what he can do, especially in the slot, in a Panthers offense primed with young talent (no pun intended). From sick to "sick routes," eh?
