Panthers FO no known interest in Sherman. Very likely a 49er.

I doubt we would have interest right now. I mean I would not want to take anything more than a prove it deal. Dude blew out both achillies.

I doubt he'll ever be the same. But saying he ruptured both achilles is false. It was only one. The second surgery was to clean bone spurs. If it was a second rupture, he wouldn't be ready at all this year.

Either way a CB at his age with a Achilles injury is not good.

I am fine not picking up Sherman but I would like Norman. And honestly he was willing to sign for 10 million last time. If he wants to come home and win the Superbowl this time we can pay him as much as anyone else within reason. Year 1 is always very cap friendly because his salary is pretty much the signing bonus. It is year 3 and 4 and the guaranteed amount that would be the sticking points. Still we have a number of players who are retiring after this year so we should have plenty next year.

Stop. There is no way Norman was going to play for 10M/yr? Honestly is far from the word you should use when making a statement like that.

At the time we were at 9 million and Norman was at 11. We were within 2 million if I remember correctly. Everyone knew he could get more on the open market but he wanted to play here. After his agent screwed up playing hardball and Norman fired him, he asked Gettleman to go back to the table with his new agent. Gettleman said too.late, hit the road. But yeah it was more about a pissing contest that could have been resolved pretty easily.

Show me anything to back that up. Players don’t get tagged for 14M and accept 10M/yr. The number was around 12M with huge guaranteed. We saw his market value. He wanted a big payday and I don’t blame him one bit.

The problem with any conversation that gets reported in an interview during contract negotiations is separating the posturing from the reality. We already know Norman's agent wouldn't negotiate in good faith which is why Gettleman rescinded the tag.  But still 10 million or 12 million in the end can be manipulated with back loaded contracts or managing the guaranteed money so that you can sign who you want which is the point. I think after Norman came back to Gettleman and wanted another chance, Gettleman  had the upper hand and could have negotiated a good deal. Even now a trade makes sense. His salary is 13.5 this year then 11 million and 12 million but only this year is guaranteed and that might be injury if he is on the roster after the fifth day of the 2018 season.  Just convert some of his salary to signing bonus to cut his cap hit to 7 million  and his dead cap next year would only be the rest of the signing bonus.

And that’s exactly how you end up with a Matt Kalil type contract. And you sure don’t trade for that contract. Seriously? If he isn’t cut, you don’t touch him.

He turned down 4/48. He got 5/75 or actually 2/37M all guaranteed. He got what he wanted. You said “honestly he would have signed for 10” and that is nowhere close to true. Bottom line.

    • Hello, soccer fans [crickets, tumbleweed flies by]. The World Cup kicks off in less than 2 weeks and, well, 🇺🇸USA USA USA🇺🇸 and all. We beat Senegal 3-2 yesterday in a tune-up friendly at BoA, with Christian Pulisic finally entering the scoring column.  How will we do in the World Cup once our tournament kicks off on the 12th? Well, there are 48 teams (assuming Iran is there) and it feels like one of two thing happens: we get grouped for the first time since '98, or we make it to the Round of 16 for the third time in the last four World Cups. I tried out the lottery for an Atlanta game and struck out, so yesterday was as World Cup as I'll get for in-person ($285/ticket for like Norway vs $39/ticket for USMNT right beforehand was a layup).  The U.S. has a travel-heavy schedule in group play, playing in LA, Seattle and LA. Real road warrior mentality being built. Glad the east coast gets worse kickoff times for a NA World Cup than a Qatar World Cup.
    • Well, that's the thing. Drafting players only for their physical measurables as you are suggesting only really happened during 2024, and X unfortunately has become the poster child for that. To be clear, it's not necessarily about drafting RAS over skill, but RAS over NFL-readiness and/or a solid body of work. Lots of players show skill in college, but those skills don't necessarily translate to the NFL for a multitude of reasons. But, getting back to the main point, to be clear, I believe that our FO is still enamored with physical gifts (who wouldn't be?), but now they're letting Dr. Eric Eager's proprietary system--his "secret sauce" prioritize the players that the Panthers draft, and it seems like it weighs not only a solid body of work, relative to a college career of course, but consistent gradual improvement as evidenced by production pretty highly.
    • Its a good article about how pathetically bad our past drafts ('23 and '24) have been. Building the team in '23 since we weren't ready yet and taking your qb in '24 made so much more sense in hindsight. Ladd McConkey over XL is pretty much a given but not sure it does as much to change Bryce's trajectory as the author suggests.  As bad as '23 and '24 drafts were, the '25 and '26 really give me hope.
