When you run your mouth for 2 seasons about retiring, what do you expect?  Unless of course you were never gonna retire, just trying to blow smoke for some big raise or something.  BR is a jerk for sure

This. I get veteran QBs being frustrated when teams spend draft capital on guys who aren’t going to help them win. But you gotta be realistic. When you’re in your mid-30s the team has to start looking for the next guy. You just throw gas on the fire when you start openly mulling retirement.

The truth of the story is Ben was discussing how he didn't understand taking someone in the 3rd round who can't help the Steelers win now after he told the organization he was playing for another 3-5 years.

"I was surprised they took a QB because I thought maybe in the third round you can get some really good players that can help this team win now. Nothing against Mason I think he is a great player. I don't know him personally but I'm sure he is a great kid. I just don’t know how backing up or being the third, who knows where he’s going to fall in the depth chart but helps us win now but that’s not my decision to make that’s all the coaches and the GM and owner...if they feel like he can help our team, so be it but I was a little surprised.”

Finished it off with a joke (he was laughing) saying he would just point to the playbook if Mason had a questions since he said on draft night he didn't need Ben to show him anything (wasn't really what Mason said).

Easier to just write the catchy headline "Ben refuses to mentor new QB!" and let people run with it.

I've never really liked Ben and I get the feeling he can be an a-hole but this story had been spun.

That's not everything he said, though.

The most asinine part for me was the bit about whether the team screwed their pick last year or this year.

I'd add that Roethlisberger is one of those jerks who frames things as a joke to keep from taking heat even though he actually means them seriously.

And its not just looking for the next guy. Bens getting up there and the chances of him starting 16 games a season decrease every season. Can't blame them for wanting a young guy with some upside that may be able to come in and not lose a couple of games a season until he retires.

Exactly!!!! I've been saying that for years, Dilfer and Brad Johnson got the easiest rings for sub par play I've ever seen

Might want to check out Terry Bradshaw's numbers in Super Bowls... and he has 4 rings and is HOF. Just goes to show, it's not all about stats.

Nobody gives a fug what your total QBR is if you're standing on a big stage holding a Lombardi aloft and Dan Patrick shoving a mike in your face.

Back to the point. Ben was talking retirement as recently as January this year and a few months later he gets pissed when the Steelers draft a QB? What a fugging douche.

Yea, made perfect sense to me why they drafted someone, maybe not 2 years in a row, but when your aging QB talks about retirement and you're pro-active about finding a replacement..... I'd call that smart business management, he probably was just hoping they'd get him new toys or new defensive players to try and get another ring before he called it quits, still an idiot for publicly criticizing them for it though

    • I'm more impressed with the UDFA that the guys they have drafted in the first the last 2 years. A whole lot of prove it is still needed before any improvement should be talked about seriously.
    • Sure.    ignore that he said this roster wasn’t good in 2023 to 2024 but keep up the effort
    • While I don't believe its a must win, (we have been better on the road this post season) it is definitely A NEED TO WIN the longer this series goes the more pronounced the Canes advantage on rest and health will be! If we hold serve at home in games 1 and 2 guaranteeing a 6 game minimum series for them if we lose the road games..... by the game 4 and 5 I expect them to be beat they have played A LOT OF HOCKEY the last three years, they have MINIMAL rest off a more physical than one might have expected series vs the leafs.... you know Tampa took their pound of flesh in round 1 from them. Combine all that with the fact that even though this year's canes squad isn't as talented as last years this IS a better squad than the one they swept last time that had McKenzie Mckeathern on line 1 Turbo with a broken hand a banged uo and eventually concussed Slavin (and even though it was a sweep 6 OTS and 4 1 goal losses is hardly dominant)  This year Bob hasn't been superman (hes probably gonna still have a great save percentage agiast us just a side effect of our style) Thatchuk is maybe 50% (3 game winners agiast us) their defense no longer has Gudas and several other downgrades.  While the Canes have a healthy and performing Svechnikov along with other big guys to counteract florida like Carrier, Jankowski, Robinson.   I by know means think it will happen but I either see this as a low scoring dog fight or a series were the canes surprise and end up dominating.
