The new "helmet" rule/penalty: Ho-Lee Carp

Seems like the new rule/penalty will have 3 (THREE!) different levels:

- If a player has been determined to have the time to consciously prepare to line up a hit and leads with his helmet: 15 yard penalty and ejection of violating player from the game.

- If a player has been determined to have initiated contact with his lowered helmet, but it was also determined to be a "bang-bang" play: 15 yard penalty.

- If a player has been determined to have lowered his helmet not to initiate contact, but to brace for expected contact: no penalty/violation of the rule.

What a clusterfug this is going to be with these horrible NFL officials these days.  "Hey, let's give them MORE poo they can make up on the fly to effect the outcomes of games!"

This league man. This is way to subjective of a rule if they decide to put it in effect. I just wish they would stop tinkering with the game and just let it be. It’s football, it has never been a safe sport and no matter what rule you create that won’t change. The players know what they are getting into when they sign up for it, but if they also make it, they benefit really well and set their families up for a lifetime.

Yikes, this sounds like a good way for the NFL to control outcomes in games to prevent smaller market teams from winning. Can't wait to see refs "determine" whether a hit was intentional, bang-bang, or to brace for contact.

I just wish they'd make two rules, which I think would cut down on the problems immensely.

  1. When a defensive player attempts to tackle an offensive player, the defensive player must make an effort wrap his arms around or otherwise grasp offensive player. Failure to do so results in a X-yard penalty.
  2. When an offensive player attempts an open field block against a defensive player, the offensive player must lead with his hands or forearms. Failure to do so results in an x-yard penalty.

Those two rules would, in my view, stop almost all attempts to lead with the helmet and reinforce fundamental tackling technique.

We shouldn't have to force grown professionals to tackle correctly, but it's pretty clear that we do.

Yes agree with the OP.  This is going to be a problem. It won't be dished out evenly or fairly.  Some teams will get screwed while others will get away with murder because its all in the opinion of the ref.  A ref who is reffing a game in one city could see the same exact play as a ref in another city and come to an entirely different conclusion.  Its subjective, and anything subjective in the NFL stinks.
