More info on the Tepper meeting

Granted, not a whole lot more, but some tidbits.

Panther leaders met with Tepper about anthem policy and more

Things we can gather from the story...

- Mike Adams was part of the meeting. Torrey Smith was not, but Smith got plenty of positive feedback from those who were.

- Coverage has said 'team captains" and veterans were there. For those who are wondering, the Observer previously listed last year's team captains as Cam Newton, Luke Kuechly, Greg Olsen, Thomas Davis, Ryan Kalil and Kurt Coleman (obviously not at the meeting).

- Anthem policy was not the only topic, but most of the other references were vague ("everything", "us as a team" per Adams). Tepper did talk some about himself, including the few stories about playing football growing up.

- No one quoted what Tepper said about his feelings on the anthem policy, but what I'm reading continues to support the notion that his plan is to suggest that community action is more important then on-field protests. Sounds like those sorts of things will be heavily encouraged, and heavily supported.

- One quote that struck me in particular...

Quote

“He let it be known that we have a voice. He understands that we have a voice,” Adams said. “And he understands that he has a voice, too. And he would like to help us with that in different ways.

Granted, that's also fairly vague, but the gist of it - including the following paragraph about how Tepper plans to help players with community efforts - fits what I see happening.

- Tepper also mentioned that he could be of help to community efforts that players are already involved in. Wasn't clear whether he was talking about his own money or his charitable foroundation, but either of those would work.

- The one other topic that was clearly spelled out? It starts with a W, ends with an "ing" and evokes Charlie Sheen. Smith said he's heard that Tepper will "keep the main thing the main thing", i.e. winning games, and championships.

- Bottom Line: It sounds like Tepper is "winning" friends and influencing people like a Dale Carnegie graduate (no relation to Carnegie Mellon). He wants to relate to the players, and those that have met him are all smiles so far.

That won't last forever of course, but it's good for now.

A few pertinent excerpts...

“It went great. Rarely do you see an owner come in and want to rush from the owners meeting and just conversate with the guys,” Adams said Tuesday after the Panthers’ OTA practice. "Just talk about everything, us as a team.

"The one thing I took away from it, the one thing I like about him is he’s got that fire and he wants to win. Not taking away from (Jerry) Richardson, but he’s fired up. He’s happy.”

“That was addressed. We talked about that,” Adams said. “It was an open conversation and that’s going to be an ongoing conversation all year long – with every team. And you know that. Everyone’s going to be all over that.”

Adams, 37, declined to go into detail about Tepper’s stance on the anthem. But Adams said Tepper seemed open to players’ views.

Adams said Tepper indicated he could help players with their work in the community and other charitable causes.

But Adams said Tepper also talked about playing on an all-dirt football field with a bent set of goalposts as a kid in Pittsburgh.

“He gave relatable stories. So we understand where he’s coming from,” Adams said. “We talked about ourselves, and both sides. So we’ve got a nice understanding.”

Quote

“I wasn’t in there, but I heard it was awesome. I heard he’s a great guy. He’s very passionate about winning and the community,” Smith said. “I think whenever you see or hear that it’s a positive sign because for me I always feel you have a responsibility. To whom much is given, much is required. …

“I think it’s awesome that he’s coming in right away and he’s going to embrace the community and keep the main thing the main thing, which is winning.”
