Annual Around the NFL Thread

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

Every year around training camp time, we've had a "catch all" thread for NFL news of general interest.

So here's this year's version, starting with an old friend...

Another formerly coveted draft prospect...

A surprising retirement, and a hit to the Colts O-Line...

The Browns making a change on their line...

And an item not technically in the NFL, but huge news nonetheless...

Meyer has reportedly been placed on paid leave, pending investigation.

Clay Travis, the wannabe rush Limbaugh of skip baylesses.

Not really familiar with him.  Used his tweet because it had the most complete explanation of why Meyer was being suspended.

It's being reported all over though, including by Rapoport.

Gonna be real interesting to see whether Meyer survives this. I'd probably bet that he won't.

At least based on what I've read, Meyer didn't do anything himself. And that'll probably be the argument people use to defend him.

He did reportedly cover up someone else's domestic violence incidents though. And frankly, that's inexcusable.

You don't let a woman be victimized for the sake of winning football games.

Word on the street is that Rasheed Suliamon was kicked off Duke’s b-ball team a few years ago after being a sexual predator and having numerous sexual assault allegations disappear and covered up from Coach K. To this day, no one really knows the reason why Suliamon was kicked off the team.

Meyer is a shithead, egotistical coach who probably doesn’t have an ounce of integrity or honesty in his body. Look at the crime syndicate teams he had at Florida. Meyer is cut from the same cloth as K, Saban, Calipari, they are all about winning and will do whatever it takes and screw over anybody in their way.

If this is isolated incident, Meyer better come clean and beg for forgiveness and make a huge donation to a charity. I’ve seen how these NCAA scandals sometimes play out and spiral out of control, especially when fueled by the media - kudos to Ohio State for getting out in front of it.

I'm not sure he can survive even if it is isolated. Not in the #metoo era.

And frankly, he probably shouldn't.

Well, this oughtta be fun.

Joel Bitonio doesn't really wanna move to left tackle.

Translation: I just signed a six year contract at elite OG salary levels, not LT salary levels. Bitonio signed for 6 years/$52M as an OG. Taylor Lewan just signed for 5 years/$80M as a LT. If he moves and plays well, expect a contract showdown next offseason.

Ohio State whacked Jim Tressel for lying, so it wouldn’t be the first time they fired a very successful coach. Tressel actually broke NCAA rules though which I don’t think Meyer has to this point.

like I said though I have seen how these NCAA “scandals” can spiral out of control. Especially with social media and click hungry reporters. This could be the tip of the iceberg and you never know what other info could leak out. Ohio State is doing the right thing and getting out in front of it, being proactive unlike some of the other big ten schools have handled stuff like Michigan State and Penn State.

    • Serious question:  Why LG and not RG?  There may be something I do not know, but Hunt's contract is huge and he could be let go after this season (post june 1 cut) and it would save the Panthers a ton of money.  Extending him would be paying a G who is in his mid 30s guaranteed money (and I do not see that as a terrible thing).  So if we release him at age 31, we save $19m.  I like him, but at 31, will he be worth the mega contract?   LG Damien Lewis has actually outperformed Hunt and he is a year younger.  He would also save less vs. the cap and leave less in the dead cap pool.  While his current contract expires after the 2027 season, he is a better prospect (IMO) to extend because only 50% of his current contract was guaranteed.  Here are his contract numbers.   Now, getting to Ickey--he could want LT money if he is offered a second contract.  If we pay him LT money to play either G positions, we are likely overpaying.  Secondly, the injury he suffered could be one that limits his productivity.  Ickey was improving, but he was an average LT.  The only way I re-sign Ickey is to have him accept a G contract and make a lot of it incentive based.     I feel like I am missing something, but in my mind, Ickey was always a guard if you consider the fact that he is an average OT and would be a great G.  Is that still the case (injury)?
    • Supplemental draft uses picks from next year. So a team were to draft him in the 1st, their upcoming 1st next draft would no longer be available. There have been some notable players that were obtained in the supplemental draft, such as Kosar. It doesn't necessarily happen every year either, and is more on a as needed basis. The gambling trouble is a big red flag for teams, and maybe pushes him down to a 4th? Not sure a team would use a 1st on him.
