Most intriguing remaining camp battles

After 2 weeks the LG spot has been earned by Van Roten and Jackson has taken a firm hold of the 2nd CB spot. Plus Moton has clearly won the RT job (granted he never had much of threat for it anyway).

The biggest battles we have left seem to be at:

Backup QB, after to 2 games here no clear winner between Heinicke and Gilbert. Possible they both might make the team

3rd RB. Barner has the special teams edge on Hood and Cap. Be nice to see Hood get a chance with the 2nd string to compare him more fairly against Cap and Barner.

Backup OT.

The line looks set with, Larsen and Sirles being the top  backup interior O-linemen. However someone needs to earn the backup tackle job. At this point Claussell seems to have the advantage over Bisnowoty.

3rd outside corner spot. Looks like we are set with Cap and Corn as the nickel corners but someone needs to step up and earn the 3rd backup corner spot. I’d say it’s down to Seymour, Doss and Gunter at this point.

4th and 5th defensive end spots. Peppers,Addison and Horton are firmly planted as the top 3 in rotation.

Hall, Obada, Haynes and Cox will be fighting for the last 2 spots.

I'd like to keep Barner for special team value alone, honestly I just really don't want Moore or CMack back there. Plus he can kind of fit the role we used Fozzy for.

I think Cox is the odd man out in the DE group Haynes and Hall are both guys we like and I think Obada might have the edge. Depends on how the coaches feel his development is.

Heres my locks to make the team at this point. Hurney said he prefers 25 and 25 on O and D if possible. Plus the 3 specialist.

For offense I have 19 locks

QB: Cam

HB: CMC,CJ

FB: Armah

WR: Funch,Smith,Moore,Samuel,Wright

TE: Olsen, Thomas

0-line: Kalil x2, Van Roten, Turner,Moton, Larsen, Sirles, Williams

*Even if we IR with designation to return Williams will have to be on active roster day 1.

Probable final 6:

Heinicke, Gilbert,Barner, Byrd, Van Laan, Clausell. If we can settle on a backup QB, might keep Amini and put him on I.R week 2, much like Williams and stash the other QB on the practice squad.

Defense 20 locks:

*TD won't be on active roster until suspension ends

DE:Peppers, Addison, Horton

DT:Short,Poe, Love, Butler

LB: Luke, Shaq, Carter, Mayo, Jacobs,

CB: Bradberry, Jackson

Nickel: Captain, Corn

Safety, Adams, Searcy, Jones, Gaulden

Probable final 5 :

Hall, Haynes, Seymour, Doss, Norris. One will have to be cut after week 4 to make room for TD.  Probably Norris unless of course injuries solve this for us.

I think we stash Obada one more year on the special exception practice squad list and keep developing him for next year.

QB2:  I think it's still totally up in the air.

RB3:  Tough one.  I think we can safely PS Hood if needed, so this might be between CAP & Barner.  Right now I'm leaning Barner.

TE3:  Sounds like Ron is planning on Manhertz taking that spot, but of course it will depend on his health and whether he comes off the PUP prior to week 1.  If he starts the season on the PUP, he's lost to us for 6 weeks I believe.

WR: only question is whether Byrd makes the roster.  It's going to come down to a question of numbers needed at other positions - perhaps the Oline.  I think he'll squeak by.  But I'd not say he's 100% safe yet.

Oline:  This and the Secondary are where the huge questions still lie, especially because presumably we will fill two initial spots on the 53 with two injured players:  Williams & Silatolu.  That could mean we only start the 53 with 7 healthy O line guys. (For instance if Mahon got sent to PS initially).

Locks:  Moton, Turner,  Ryan Kalil, Van Roten, Matt Kalil (sigh), Larsen.

Probable:  Sirles.   [Mahon???  => Would Mahon be safe on the PS for 24 hours until we can IR Williams???]

Need to keep for 24 hours:  Williams & Silatolu

This doesn't really give us ANY healthy depth at tackle on the starting 53???!!!!  Unless Sirles counts.  No idea if Clausell can be relied on for tackle depth.  But I'd doubt we'd add him until after we IR Williams.  I assume Clausell would be safe on PS if he's still eligible...

The O line situation is a mess.  I still think we're going to try to add someone from outside, especially a tackle.  But good luck with that.  The whole league probably wants to improve their tackle depth.  Sigh.

Defense:

DE 4/5:  Battle between Hall, Haynes, B. Cox, Obada.  Two should make it.  Right now I'd bet Hall & Haynes.  Obada is at a disadvantage since we could safelyPS him as an extra 11th guy on the PS with the international exemption again. But then it would mean he's ineligible for the 53 all season, which would be lousy for him.

DT: No battle

LB:  With TD off the roster for the 1st part of the season, we should keep 6 guys.  Luke, Shaq, Mayo, Norris and Carter seem pretty certain.  Only question might be who gets #6.  Probably Jacobs is in the lead....

CB:  Bradberry, Jackson, Munnerlyn, Elder locks.  Seymour/Doss / Gunter battle for #5.  Not sure we have space for 6... much will depend on how many guys we keep on the Oline.

Safety:  Looks like Adams, Searcy, Gaulden & Jones are  locks.  Possible question marks:  Southward & D. Cox.

I notice you don't mention Mahon.

Do you think we can safely stash him on the PS?  Seems he's been getting some stories about him... (i.e. Norwell comparison).  I wonder if he'd be claimed by another team.  Dang I hate having to risk guys like him to keep Williams & Silatolu for 24 hours.

Mahon will make the 53

Yea Mahon hasn’t shown enough to warrant an active roster spot for us, some other team would have to be extremely desperate to try and pluck him off the PS.

ZERO chance Haynes doesn't make this team.  Hell in a pinch he might even have the size to play a little LB or some sort of Joker package. He's a 4th rounder who has made plays in both preseason games, no chance he's cut. Also feel like we'd be reluctant to give up on Hall just yet, so feel like they're the two to round out that battle. Cox and Obada to the PS if possible.

At LB... Luke, Shaq, TD are locks, as are Mayo and Carter.  Would like to see Andre Smith make it as the 6th guy because he has more potential than any of the remaining guys, but maybe he could make the PS for this year.

Barner is a CMC backup. Armah is a 2nd option powerback behind CJ.. Since we can p-squad hood it’s really a no brainer..

Check out the data on the running backs I've compiled for the two preseason game.  Interesting glimpse at their relative production and how they're being used.  Barner & CMC both rocking in terms of yards per touch/target.  CAP struggling in yards/attempt, but that may be situational...

I thought Mahon was a sure bet to make the team and had a good chance at starting LG. Now it seems that Van Roten is going to be the starter. Mahon could still make the team but he has a good chance of just making the practice squad.

I think Haynes and Hall are a lock to make the team. Obada may look good in preseason but more is invested in Haynes and Hall and they are younger. They are playing well too.

I have always thought that Love may not make the team this year and we may give 7th round pick Norton a shot at DT but I haven’t heard anything about him so I am thinking he may just be a wasted pick and end up making the practice squad.

I questioned the Carter pick especially as early as he was drafted but he has looked great and will probably make the team. The fact he can play special teams basically locks him in. Norris has a good shot. I thought Smith had a good chance at making the team and he does have potential but it seems Norris and Carter are better players.

I think Seymour will make the team. Munnerlyn can play the outside despite his size and actually has done a decent job at it. Corn will probably make the team. It comes down to Doss and Gunter. Is Doss just a player who looks good in practice?

    • and they don’t get paid and teams don’t keep playing them
    • Then if he needs time to grow up and he is going to sign an extension in needs to be a 3 year, 20m AAV. He doesn't deserve to get paid like a top 10 QB right now because he's not. Daniel Jones is getting 14m and is playing top notch football.  He may have had some better games, but his mechanics and footwork are still terrible when he feels any pressure, real or not. When he feels good, he steps into his throws like he should. When he doesn't, it's that body squared up or jumping arm toss or tip toe lob. His fumbling is a huge problem. He cant run QB sneaks. He cant really play from under center because his drop backs are terrible and he needs to be far back to get enough gapping to see the field. That's not top 10 QB contract worthy.  And let's not pretend that Bryce is some victim in all of this. Remember him packing on 20 lbs before the combine for the weigh in and walking around in a hoodie the entire time or practicing that S2 test that no one has mentioned before or since so he'd have better results, or riding that hype train like the wheels weren't ever going to fall off. Stroud got roasted and torn apart because of a "leaked" S2 result. He was being portrayed as an idiot while Bryce was being portrayed as a savant. All Stroud ever said was watch me play football. He proved his point.  Bryce did everything he could to make himself the number 1 overall pick and when that happens, guess where you're going? To a bad team, likely with a new coach and it's probably going to be full of dysfunction especially if the owner is Dave Tepper. But the real dysfunction came because Bryce wasn't Reich's choice for QB. He wanted Stroud because Stroud fit the type of offense he ran better than Bryce ever could. That's why he lost interest as soon as he was drafted. He was forced to play Bryce when it was obvious he wasn't ready to show off Tepper's shiny new draft pick. No HC is going to come to a team when he gets no choice over who he has as a QB to build around and he has to reinvent the wheel when the easiest thing to do was just buy the wheel that fit to begin with. Tepper lied to Reich all the way up until draft day, then he made that pick. Then Reich checked out, and i don't blame him one bit. And I'll be clear, I didn't want Reich. I wanted Steichen because of what he's doing in Indy or Ryans because I thought he would make one hell of a leader and HC.  Reich was a HC with no control over his own team. I put the majority of what's gone wrong involving Bryce on Tepper. The trade gave up too much in picks and DJ to build around him, we had a horrid GM who couldn't draft or build a roster, a QB forced to play before he's ready, an owner that thinks he knows more than football people.    There's a lot of moving pieces in all of this, but we cant pay Bryce 50m AAV at the end of this season while he figures it out, and the 5th year doesnt make sense either if we're a run heavy offense with Bryce as game manager. You dont need a 30m, 5th year option QB for that. If he's not there developmentally, he's not there.  Unfortunately, there isnt time to just calm down. He plays like a game manager this year and we have to move on. You dont give game managers huge contracts behind the highest paid oline in football, especially when you need to sign your LT. Any journeyman can give us Bryce level results for 15m less per year. Just the way it is. If there was more time, maybe. Unfortunately there isn't. Just the way it is.
    • We’ve had opportunities to take 2 of the top 5 Cs in the game and instead we took TMJ and Johnathan Brooks. Our drafts since 2017 have been 1 player per draft and then huge misses on lots of really good NFL players (who the huddle have talk about in the draft threads). It’s been mentioned here so many times to draft more OL once you get to the 2nd and beyond since C/G talent is top tier in day 2 and lots of surprise day 3 guys. Taking Brooks over Frazier just looks worse and worse as our OL helps Chuba and Rico look great and Frazier would be a large improvement over Mays.
