Impressions - Preseason 3

My thoughts from the game - The Good:

The left side of the offensive line looked good tonight. Both Moton and Van Roten have had solid preseasons overall. This won't be among the best lines in the league, but the only spot I'm really concerned about is whoever plays tackle opposite Moton.

I was also pleased with the play of Ian Thomas. He may not have gotten any targets, but he blocked well, just as he did against Miami last week. His assignments haven't been difficult, mostly just having seal his guy off to one side, but he's done a good job of executing what he's been asked to do. Between that and the speed he showed on his touchdown against Miami, I'm very optimistic about this kid's future.

I've been cautious in my optimism regarding Samuel up to this point. For one thing, he'd been mostly going against backups. For another, while he hasn't had any drops so far, he also doesn't seem to have completely eliminated his bad habit of trying to basket catch everything. This game was very encouraging on both fronts. First he roasted Gilmore on an out route, then he made a nice adjustment to a slightly off target deep throw and reached up to snare it with his hands. He's probably the 4th or 5th wideout on our depth chart right now, but we have to find snaps for him.

I like what we're doing in the pass game. It's hard to see exactly what's happening from the broadcast angle, but it looks like the majority of our plays feature deeper routes that clear out space for McCaffrey to go one-on-one or a mesh concept. I like that we're attacking multiple levels of field and that we're giving McCaffrey so many opportunities. He was great as a receiver last year and looks even better in this system.

I'd call this a neutral outing for Donte Jackson. He a big third down tackle but also completely whiffed on a tackle later. Coverage is hard to evaluate from the broadcast angle and even harder when he's constantly being asked to play 10 yards off the line, but I thought his coverage looked pretty good when he was allowed to play tighter.

The Bad:

Really bad game from Munnerlyn, missing tackles and coverage assignments. He was a really good nickel corner once, but it's looking like that time has passed.

Everyone has noted this, but the defensive play calling leaves a lot to be desired. We are just giving first downs away with our alignment.

Inconsistent route-running is holding DJ Moore back. It did look like he got held on that 3rd-and-goal play, but the corner wouldn't have been able to touch him if he runs the route better. He needs to be more explosive on that fake to the outside to get the corner moving more laterally and create more separation on the break to the inside. The slant that was broken up was also a poor route. There was an out-breaking route that was supposed to rub off his defender on the play, but he didn't drive hard off the ball like he needed to in order to push his defender into the path of the out route. Failing that, he could have used a jab step to try to sell the outside release, but all he did was pause for a second then run inside. He still got inside position just off his quickness, but the defender was right there to make a play on the ball. On the plus side, he got a great release off the ball on the play where Heinicke overthrew Byrd in the end zone. Couldn't see it on the broadcast, but I'm betting he was wide open. Just need to get that every time.

Good summary of my thoughts on DJ, he’s going to need to do a lot of work to start getting cleaner releases from press and work on his route finesse to create separation.

We have a different kind of owner now. There is no way he allows Amini or Kalil to start if there is a better player on the team. I just don’t see Tepper being the kind of guy that allows stupidity to effect his business.

I don't want our owner dictating who plays and who doesn't. Now if he wants to get rid of the coaches who can't seems to figure out how to get the right people on the field then OK by me.

Wish I could say the same about right tackle, and honestly about center.

Clausell looked decent, but he, and frankly probably Moton, are gonna struggle the first time they see speed rushers. Moton, I think, has the athleticism to adjust, but Clausell, I doubt does. He'll need help from Thomas and Armah. I dunno if they try Matt at RT when he comes back, but he'll need help too...frankly, anyone we have at RT is gonna need help if we face a really good DE. The Pats have decent DEs, but they aren't as good as who we'll see many times this year.

Ryan looked old and tired. I think he still has the edge because of his OL calls, but he looked out of step. I think some of that has to do with rust...he hasn't really played this pre-season until now. I'm hopeful he'll be up to speed when Dallas rolls in. In any event, I don't worry about his backup...probably the best backup C in the NFL at this point. If we lose another G or T though...holy cow. We definitely need to sign someone.

Donte Jackson and Curtis Samuel brought a lot of attitude to their respective positions, I like it.

That’s is something really important tha doesn’t show up on stat sheet.  After Donte made that stop on 3rd down you could feel the electricity in the stadium.  Momentum turner.  We have missed that since Norman.
