What did we learn from the 4th preseason game?

I thought that after gameplanning and being up for the Patriots, we came out flat tonight. I didn't see any gameplanning or blitz pickup that was effective. Given we play them in the regular season there was no adjustments or attempts to adjust.  Allen was not good although his completion numbers belie the pick six or lack of touch on the ball. He threw dumpoffs and underneath routes which the defense gave him but may make the practice squad.  I thought Heinicke won the back up job although he started slow. Barner is the better and versatile back although CAP made a case for a roster spot.

What I really saw if how many guys are not going to.make the team for good reason.

I am a supporter of Byrd, but not SC. How can you say what he isn't when he is targeted and the balls are catchable 98% of the time he catches them. There have been times that he has been open, but not targeted. So yes I want him to make the team and have some plays in with the 1s. He has earned it! Whether its here or somewhere else. He is a good WR just needs his chance. Ya he got hurt last yr but so did KB, Funchess, Samuels, etc it happens doesn't mean it will happen this yr.

I think it's because he hasn't made very many mistakes thus far. Byrd doesn't have huge numbers, but he also doesn't have fumbles, penalties, balls that bounce off his chest plate and turn into interceptions. He doesn't drop easy catches. He doesn't take returns out of the endzone only to get tackled at the fifteen yard line. And as such he comes across as a net positive with a ton of potential.

And he's local, and we've seen him get better while being here.

It is easy to not have mistakes when you don't play.  Byrd only has around 120 receiving yards total as a pro.  No idea how many yards as a returner, but not many.

You are not in this camp, but many here would like to see Smith cut and Byrd added to the roster.  Same people bash Smith for only having 500-600 yards in receiving.  If Byrd got 500-600 receiving yards this year the Huddle would lobby to erect a statue of him, but if Smith gets the same stats, everyone will want to cut him.

First off, I want to point out that I'm not one of the guys who thinks Torrey should be cut. Lol. I think he's probably a genius in the receiver's room and I imagine he's helping all the guys with techniques on watching film. But he hasn't done much in the preseason on the field, and for his career he's caught less than 50% of his targets.

I'm not sure which drop you feel was over the wrong shoulder, but he just didn't do the greatest job tracking the deep ball. And the target he got on third down in the Patriots game, hit him in the hands. Now, in his defense, neither was a particularly easy catch to make, but it doesn't change the fact that he did not catch them.

As far as Byrd goes, who cares what his stats were like in college. If he's good now, he's good now. There's no disputing that he has talent/athleticism (4.2 speed, 40" vert, near 11' broad jump). It's obvious that Byrd hasn't gotten a ton of opportunity, but he's made plays when he's gotten the chance (like making a tough catch in the back of the end zone against two defenders, or not fumbling a ball on a play where he broke his arm after contact with a player's helmet).

Idk, he looks like he could be a consistent player for us if he stops being shoved to the bottom of the depth chart every time we add a Russell Shepard or Charles Johnson or Torrey Smith or Jarius Wright.

Amen! Im tired of him being at the bottom every yr I think he will get to be in with the ones during preseason no still with 2s and 3s. How can you know what he has if he isnt given the opportunity to play with the 1s. Its hard for me to watch bc I look for him when he is in and he is open but not targeted maybe its the play design itself but Jesus look like him and Samuels would be given opportunity to play with the ones. Samuels is getting his chance now I believe but thats bc he us 2nd rd draft pic. Like he said above who cares about where drafted play the best talent on team as of now

You twisted what I said. It is easy to not have mistakes when you don’t play, but Byrd has played. And instead of making mistakes when he’s gotten opportunities (like many other players do, including many of the guys last night), he makes plays. The amount of plays he makes seems to be in line with the amount of opportunities he’s given to make said plays. And it is my belief that he gets the love he gets because he almost never makes a negative impact.

As far as far as Torrey goes, if he ends up with an efficient 600 yards (meaning he doesn’t need 25% a Cam’s passing targets per game to reach that number) then huddlers will love Torrey.

Mick still sucks. We need to cut him now and trade for a decent play-by-play guy. Waiting to claim one off of waivers is just nuts. Without a good PBP guy, we may as well not even be on TV. Maybe we can restructure Ruck's contract and offer someone Donnalley in return for a decent PBP guy. I know he won't be all-pro, but hopefully he won't continually gush over Ron's ample chest.

roflmao! No need to get worked up, if that isn't sarcasm. That game was his last on TV for the season. It'll be the network guys from now, on out. Mick will go back to radio which is a shame because Szoke and Robinson were soooo much better on the radio for the preseason without him.
