Hate to say it. But you can remove Star. For a first rounder we got a serviceable above average starter who bolted the first chance he got after never becoming the playmaking force in the middle that we expected to be drafting.

Then add KB to the mix.

I was on board with most of his picks. I'm not trying to derail. Simply trying to say that things don't always turn out the way you expect. We definitely learned that with Hurney the first go around, and we saw it with DG as well.

Hurney was money on his first round picks for the most part.  Rarely did he miss in 1st round potential and as time goes by I wonder how much influence JR had on his other picks.   Unless Hurney ever say so you have to put the blame on him.  For as good as he was in round 1 he was horrific in round 2.

This year he seemed to have nailed our first 4 picks and the lower round have huge potential.

Star was a disappointment in that he didn’t become a pass rusher. I still think he was a great pick at the time given our dt situation. He was definitely great at what he did though. And he did make a lot of plays. He wasnt an Aaron Donald but he was a great player for us. And I don’t think you can slight that pick. He went after the most money, and we had other plans. Poe was an awesome pickup if he can stay healthy.

Another poster acknowledged the reality that the 2013 draft was fairly ugly on the whole for a lot of teams in the first. In that regard we certainly can't be upset with the pick of course, and I'm not arguing against that. But we can absolutely admit that the return could have and should have been more.

I'm gonna have to be honest, and say I don't think Star ever really truly wanted to be here to begin with. So just saying he went after the most money and we had other plans I would have to disagree with. He was our plan dude. We spent a frickin first rounder on him. The plan was for him and KK to be the future forces in the middle to take us to the promised land ala what the Eagles have which ultimately netted them a Lombardi trophy.

Um no you can’t pay two dlineman 130 million dollars between the two of them. We signed Poe for half of what star left for. Marty actually did the right thing here. You could probably blame DG for the Kalil signing and you’d get no argument from me.

You can say what you want about star wanting to leave. I don’t buy it. I think it’s his personality. I never once questioned is work ethic or desire on the football field when he was here. Ever listen to that podcast with him? He loved the people here. He took the most money because he has like a billion kids. Haha.

Wasn't Vernon Butler drafted to avoid tying up 130 million in the event that Kawann Short left?

At one point in contract negotiations didn't many fans think Short was basically already out the door? Suddenly we signed him, and the next thing you know Star is playing out his contract year and can't wait to leave.

I think DG hoped Star would be a superior version of the player we recently acquired in Poe. We took KK in the second round because we again couldn't pass up the value. But the potential of Star was the focal point. It just didn't pan out.

And to be clear I'm in no way questioning Star's work ethic. I don't think that was at all the issue. Perhaps a misunderstanding in expectations ultimately.

You are BUGGIN if you would label Star a disappointment. No, he wasnt Aaron Donald——but he drew double teams and kept guards off of Kuechly and allowed KK to have one on one matchups. Look up our rush defense in 2011 and 2012 and then look it up from 2013 to now. It’s not a coincidence

2013 was a fun season, but it ultimately got us where exactly? One and done.

2015 is where the Panthers defense truly hit it's stride, and KK balling out en route to having a pro bowl and all team honors season was crucial in that.

From there on is when Star kinda trailed off. He wasn't invisible, but he was in no way the disruption we had hoped for.

LMAOOOO so 2013 was Star’s fault? We had the #2 defense in the entire league. We lost in 2013 to a dominant team that had a better roster than us. Plain and simple. Having questionable refs and of course Shula didnt help

You brought up the context of seasons my man. I'm responding.

Star and KK were early in their development. Never blamed the failure of that season on either. If I recall the secondary proved to be an achilles heel in 2013. It's improvement and KK becoming a force to be reckoned with resulted in the success of 2015.

On a different note, it was interesting to hear the decision on Heinicke vs Gilbert came down to the fact that Heinicke can run more of the playbook. There isn't as much you have to scrap.

That was apparent the last game but I really did like Gilberts arm.
