Rivera's defensive schemes have always been heavily dependent on getting pressure, something we're not getting this season.

We saw in preseason that teams were attacking us with a lot of short, quick throws. That's continued into the season and teams are having success with it. And honestly, even the best defensive line in the world isn't gonna get there that quick.

Scheme wise, continuing to play our defensive backs way off the line isn't really helping.

Agree and I'd rather see the corners play press and go for it and risk getting beat deep rather than allowing teams to dink and dunk us to death.  The safety play has been pretty bad this year and I'm sure this has a lot to do with our corners not playing a lot of press coverage.

Even if our corners are in press coverage, I'm not confident our DL can get pressure on the QB and this is a recipe for disaster with our safeties.

To be fair though. There really is not much you can do with a QB that can operate the dink and dunk Offense. And Smith happens to be one of the best. They are going to move the ball on you. The only way to beat them is when they get into the RedZone. The field shrinks, and they become less efficient. You have to wait on penalties, or dropped passes, otherwise Smith is going to move the ball.

Ah hellz, there is something wrong right now. I don't care who fixes it. Just get it fixed would ya.

I agree and great point.   I don't know what is going on with our D, but it certainly looks like our DL isn't as dominant as they have been in the past.  I thought Poe was going to be an upgrade over Star, but perhaps we all miscalculated just how good Star was.

Wilkes was the DBs coach before becoming DC, and then the DBs struggled. Washington was the Dline coach before becoming DC, and the Dline is struggling. Coinky dinky?

That's an interesting line of thinking . . .

When Wilkes moved from secondary to DC, obviously he knew his DB's well.  As such, his defensive calls put a lot of pressure on the unit he knew so much about.  He blitzed a lot and forced his DB's to cover.

When Washington moved from DL to DC, he knew the DL.  He is now putting most of the onus on the DL to pressure the QB and that's where we're failing.

I'm not sure there's anything there, but I'm also not sure there isn't something there.

I truly believe it is a combination. They trust their positional players, but they are no longer there to help them develop. Kind of a catch 22, dammed if you do sort of thing.

I keep hoping Ron will sit down with Eric and offer to give him some help of some kind. Cuz I just know, Ron cannot be looking at this D and be totally happy.

I guess, we as fans get used to having a pretty good D. So when it falters, we get all antsy and stuff. Folks demand their expectations be met. And when they aren't. Well...look at the thread titles on the main page. That will tell you how folks feel.
