Two Backs vs One

Mr. Scot

Us fans need to remember that we don't get to see practices every day and are not in the locker room or players' meetings.  Sounds like Anderson wasn't a good fit for what we needed or perhaps the Panthers felt like he wasn't giving 100%.

Everyone here had a meltdown when the Panthers traded Benjamin for scraps and hindsight this was a great move.  I'm just pointing this out because coaches saw the true Benjamin at practices and meetings and perhaps Anderson was along the same lines.

We didn't initiate the Benjamin trade. Buffalo did.

And we've seen Anderson play in actual games. He played well.

Not sure why it matters who initiates a trade when both teams consent to it.

All I'm saying is there is probably more to this Anderson move that we'll never hear about.  Perhaps Anderson had a bad attitude and was complaining about touches all the time.  I have no idea but teams cut players for a reason.

They've given a reason. It's a stupid reason.

If it's due to him complaining, that's also a stupid reason. It rewards him for doing so and makes us worse.

Stewart and Williams were almost never healthy at the same time so this notion the Panthers have always had a two back system is flawed. Even after Williams was cut before the 2015 season, Stewart was the primary back from 2015-2016. 2017 was the first season in awhile the Panthers had two true running backs healthy and involved in the offense the whole season.

2008?

That's not really the point of the discussion though. The question isn't whether one back or two back systems work better.

It's about what Ron Rivera prefers, and evidence points to that being a single "bell-cow" back.

The only evidence you have to say that Rivera prefers a single RB system is that they didn't use and cut CJ Anderson. The only other time in Rivera's tenure he had two healthy starting caliber running backs was 2017 and he used them both. Every other season he had Stewart and Williams, they were never healthy at the same time so we don't know what he would have done. We also don't even know if he would have made that decision seeing as Rivera is a defensive guy and may have left the decision up to Chud/Shula/Norv.

Not quite true.

Some time back, Rivera actually made some comments about being tired of platooning Williams and Stewart and decided to just name Stewart the starter and Williams the backup. The plan got derailed because Stewart got hurt.

I didn't include that in the OP because I didn't feel like looking up the comments, but it did happen and I can look it up if needed. Others might remember it though.

That's nice, except it makes us worse.

Anderson was only signed to a one-year contract. We've played nine games. And now we let him go to keep him happy, in the process make ourselves worse and make some other team better?

I seem to recall somebody saying the first, second and third things that he cared about were all "winning". This doesn't exactly contribute to that.

That is all I do care about, but there is something to be said about crying over spilt milk. Bitching about it now changes nothing.

Should we refrain from discussing mistakes our team makes?

I believe in being a fan, but for me that description doesn't include acting like every move my team makes is good and wise and pure.

Failing to acknowledge issues doesn't make them go away. It does, however, do a lot to prevent them from being solved.

I didn’t avoid the subject just gave my 2 cents about why I thought they did it. Do I like the move? No, do I kinda get why they did it? yes.

But if you asked me what I’m actually pissed about right now, it’s Washington still being the DC when he is clearly not good.

but us cutting a decent player who hasn’t really done anything to help us on offense, especially with offense not being an issue right now doesnt really trigger me.

And if McCaffrey gets hurt?

We've got several backups who "haven't done anything for us" this year. Would that make it a good idea to let go of them?

I'd add that Anderson actually did play for us this year and looked good doing it. Why not use him more, especially if we want to be ready for the playoffs?
