Not necessarily.  While an offensive coach is my preference as well, I think an aggressive defensive coach who is willing and able to bring in an offensive hot shot might be just as good.  He will just need to let the OC be as creative as he can be and not interfere and focus so much on slowing the clock.

Kris Richards might be a good option, except I'm not sure if he's ready yet.  But he does seem to have that aggressiveness I like.

I'm down with this too ^ point blank we need to change our culture. We've always been known for great defense but our offense has usually been a driving factor for us not going all the way. We need a coach that promotes all the right pepole. Our staff has usually stayed within their comfort zone and it's hurt us over the years.

I want someone who is creative and aggressive.  With Cam, CMC, Moore, and Samuel, we have the potential to be the most dynamic offense in the league if we have an offensive staff with enough creativity.  And I don't want a coach that is afraid to fail.  I want a guy with the philosophy to try and put the defense on their heels every game and not let up...kind of like we see with NO, KC, and the Rams.

So, which of these guys fits that criteria.  Defilippo probably sounds like the most likely, but I keep hearing mixed messages about how he is perceived throughout the league, and that gives me some pause.  Dan Campbell looks to be a really good coach with a big picture view of things, but I'm a bit concerned that he'll be a bit too old school for what I want.  Yes, he's been working under Payton recently, but his biggest influence is Parcells who fundamentally fits the NFL of twenty years ago more than the modern game.

And many of the other guys seem to be OC's in name only since many work under HC's that also act as play caller (such as Bieniemy and Carmichael).  I just know that whoever we hire needs to be more aggressive than Ron is (except when he is on the hot seat), and I honestly think that's the type of coach Tepper will want as well since it seems to fit his personality.

This is from the Marvez article I wuoted earlier...

One lesson learned was the value of outside-the-box thinking when it comes to game-planning, especially when facing a superior opponent. Campbell vividly remembers how Parcells laid the groundwork for a 31-28 upset over Kansas City during the 2005 season.

"They were No. 1 in the league in points per game, and we were not that type of team, although we had a good defense," Campbell said. "Parcells said, ‘Look, we’re gonna be aggressive. We’re gonna throw the ball down the field. On fourth down, we’re gonna go for it.’

"It was totally opposite than the nature of how he had taught us to play. But we won the game because we outscored them."

Please no more DC..

There aren't any truly interesting DC candidates this year. And given the league emphasis on offense, that's probably going to be true for a while.

Guess that's another good thing about Jerry Richardson being gone. He always insisted on defensive coaches. If he were still around, we'd be looking for another one (assuming he was even willing to fire Rivera).

Going back to the actual topic...

Everything I read about Dan Campbell points to one major fact: he's really smart. The fact that he's gotten comments on his intelligence from some of the smarter coaches in the league says a lot.

I wouldn't call Rivera an idiot, but I wouldn't call him a genius either. I think having someone smarter in the coach's spot would make a huge difference.

What is there to not like about John Harbaugh?  Serious question here.  Granted his teams have had a few up and down seasons but 7 of his 11 seasons had winning records.

I think with consistant QB play over the past few years, the Ravens could have been even better.  He's not a loony like his brother and seemed to always have a competitive team.

That he's a retread, which puts him out of contention if Tepper follows the Steeler method (which I expect him to).

Mind you, it's also still true at the moment that no head coach who's won a Super Bowl with one team has ever won another one with a different team. It's possible of course, but it hasn't happened yet.

If you like Harbaugh though, the guy people expect to be the next John Harbaugh is Dave Toub.

Kliff Kingsbury deserves an interview

Couldn't win at Texas Tech...

8-5 in his first season as head coach. After the season it was clear he wasn't going to offer Baker Mayfield a scholarship and thus he lost a future Heisman winner. Mayfield did get a lot of use but he chose Davis Webb to be the guy.

4-8 Had Pat Mahomes coming in and lighting it up but continued to let Davis Webb be the man here again.

7-6 Pat Mahomes gets his first year starting the whole season. Winning record by one game. Next year should be amazing, right?

5-7 wrong! Mahomes threw for 5k yards, 65%+ completions, 41 TDs and only 10 INTs! Mahomes chipped in 12 TDs rushing too! How do you lose with a QB like this?!

6-7. and 5-7 again to end his college coaching career. His name is overrated. The dude clearly doesn't have a clue or pulse when it comes to defense. And that run game? With the amount of lighting it up they did via the air why did they only have one good year in terms of yards per carry?

Kliff can't figure out how to run the ball or defend any play and we want to look at him as a head coach? He can be an offensive coordinator but I believe that Texas Tech always puts up air yards, its their system. He couldn't win with Baker Mayfield or Pat Mahomes and chose to let Davis Webb be the starting QB over them so he obviously isn't the best judge of talent either.

    • The only thing I said was he was part of the staff that made part of the decisions, and that I am judging the decisions made by that group as a whole. As assistant GM, you can pretty much guarantee his input held more sway than an intern or the guy that takes coffee requests. Fitterer didn't operate in a vacuum. Neither does Morgan now. While Fitterer did have the ultimate decision, to say that Dan had no input in ranking boards, evaluating FAs, trade offers or anything else would be asinine. We all know he did. Otherwise what the hell was his job as assistant GM? He wouldn't have been kept for 3 years if he was arguing every decision Scott ever made.    And the actual quote was "Morgan has done a bang up job in the draft and FA. Compared to what the last guy did, he is kicking ass and taking names." So is XL kicking ass and Brooks taking names from last years draft or did I get it backwards? We took Wallace over Payton Wilson because he was an injury risk after trading up for a RB with a torn ACL? Which one of the kicking ass and taking names was that?  Maybe we should review the thousands of gameday posts calling for XL to get off the field because he's a bust and can't catch a cold. We could review the posts about Brooks but... And Wilson. He's at 118 tackles this season vs 36 for Wallace.  I gave credit to Dan for a good draft this year. But I'm also not ignoring last year's draft either since he did that one after the last guy too.  That's not a strawman.
    • And then, in week 18, we can take Mayfield out of the game and whoop Bridgewater's @$$ for good measure! Let the former QB revenge train roll on!!
    • If we keep our guards in tact ($$$) and go with Mays at C, some OT depth would be nice. I think we should be happy about CB with Thornton's development (pre injury) and Smith Wade. I think Ransom is developing nicely, but I would like to see a FS type for situations. We suck at ILB and Edge (as a whole). We should be OK at RB.  I hope we sign Dowdle to a short contract. QB?  There are signs of hope and development.  (I don't like our backup QB) TE?  Good draft for TE, but I think we are developing with Evans, Sanders, and Tremble. WR?  A #2 with Coker and Horn in the slot.  XL?  What is that? We should be good in 2026. Morgan does more than draft.  Free agency has been strong too.  (Just emptying my brain on your comment--sorry)
