Is it the system or the pending contract?

It is Davis' maturity as a player.

With that said, I question the value of drafting positional projects in the 1st round. By the time Davis finally figured out the LBer position, his contract was expiring. Part of being successful in the NFL is getting good production out of relatively cheap rookie contracts.

Davis has played his ass off every year, he's not the type to be lax until his contract is up. i think it's a combination of maturity, Beason's influence, and the play calling putting him in better position.

No he has picked it up this year.

Pending contract no doubt about it.

a number of things.

davis is playing in a system that naturally causes action to flow to the WLB. He's also always been really awesome, he just never put up the stats to go with his play.

i don't really think it's his contract. He knows the Panthers are going to pay him, even overpay him if they have to. If chris gamble is worth what he got, how much is thomas davis worth? also, Davis is incredibly tied into the Charlotte community, beason is his best friend, and he's the perfect fox player.

basically i <3 davis in a way that's not natural

I don't think its a matter of his contract as much as it's been him settling down. The previous two seasons he played well. This year, its part of the system which features the Will LB more than the Mike. I'm glad for it.

Now as far as his contract...god only knows how much he's going to cost us, but I think he's incredibly valuable.

If the CBA isn't extended, he will be an RFA for another 2 years and the Panthers will have all kinds of leverage in negotiations.

He's improved every year he's been here, and with the new system playing heavily to his strengths he is looking like a beast. Extra motivation in the form of a contract never hurts, but I honestly believe he would be doing this well regardless.

The further we get into the season, the better he is going to play. And with Beason finally looking like his former self now that the line is tightening up, one bright spot that all Panther fans have to look forward to each sunday will be the two of them trying to outplay each other.

    • Trade up for a project was dumb, he's gonna be 25 next month. By the time you're deciding on whether he's worth the 5th year option or a big contract you're already gonna be thinking about moving on soon either way.
    • I mean this is legit AF statement....you don't spend that draft capital on a project just like you don't trade up for an injured RB either, which was done in the same draft.  That draft IMO was a necessary evil for DM to learn from his mistakes (I think he did but some may not). Also I have to mention I'm a big Coker fan and think getting him as an UDFA was obv a steal.  Coker is the better WR2 at this point as Legette and its not even debatable unfortunately.  Give him year 3 but don't expect much from him.  Continue in the offseason with adding as much talent and competition on the roster as possible including WR.  Or just trade his ass for peanuts and continue to build roster by any means.......
    • Losing him was a huge loss. Look at how the Bears went from a 5 win team to now a 11 win team. The Lions offensive line is bad this year, secondary is bad and Campbell going for it on 4th down all the time has cost them games instead of taking the Field Goals. Goff is inconsistent as well.
