Looking towards the draft.

Hindsight is always 20/20. Before Kareem Hunt went all Greg Hardy, I would've said absolutely yes. I'd take Barnett/Samuel/Hunt all day everyday over CMC/Samuel/Hall. But that all went out the window recently. So, we'd have to have taken Kamara in the 2nd to have a big time impact RB  and that would mean giving up Samuel.

well also, we just need more time to fully evaluate a draft class.

We have no idea how many years Kamara , CMC, Samuel , Barnett will play. What injuries they will sustain. If they have any accidents or mishaps that cause them to have very short careers (ex. Kareem Hunt). Even Curtis was injured all throughout his rookie campaign , and CMC was playing spot duty rushing wise behind Jstew.

Give it at least 4 years and then do your hindsight analysis.

I don't think our DE need is dire enough to throw good sense out the window and just draft DE after DE with no regard to the overall draft board. That is how we ended up with that horrible Gettleman draft that we desperately took CB's.  We all saw how that ended.

You have to stick to your board and as much as we all want to be able to build through the draft, we do have the ability to make some smart free agent signings to give us time to build through the draft.

We have enough needs that it will have to happen anyway and some of them may be as critical as DE, or more. If we cannot retain Williams, that suddenly becomes a very big need. If we let Reid or Adams walk, that suddenly becomes a very big need. TD retiring also would create a big need at LB. We have multiple spots to fill, all of which can doom us just as much as DE can.

Defensive Line will be the first round pick---MARK MY WORDS!!

First of all, we have glaring needs on DL and OL.  They are the biggest.  We can get by with what we have at S if we re-sign Reid, move him to SS and play Gaulden and Searcy at S.  At CB, Jackson and Bradberry are good enough if we get pressure up front.  We need a nickel.

Offensive Line?  Well, at T we are not bad (Moton, Williams, Clark, xxxxx)  if Williams is good to go.  At C, we have Larsen and could upgrade in the third round.  Van Roten was decent and could be better in 2019---I like his motor.

At DE, we have Addison (32) and a bunch of one-dimensional players (Obada, Cox Jr, Horton, Haynes).  We need a stud to play day 1.

At DT, we could use both a 3 tech (UT) and a NT--with the biggest need at UT.

I think we need to look for 2 starters/rotational DL players out of this draft---a DE and a DT are critical. We should pick there in rounds 1 and 2.

(we are probably picking around 16--assume that a QB or two, a few DBs, an OL, WR, and LB will also be picked before us):

Defensive Ends

  • Prolly gone before we pick:  Bosa (Ohio St), Ferrell (Clemson)
  • Likely in play:  Z. Allen (BC) J. Allen (KY):   These are different players-one a 6-5 285 lb bull-rushing, run stuffing DE who can move inside to 3Technique,, the other a 6-5, 260 lb. 3/4 OLB 4/3 DE.  Josh Allen could be gone at 16, but Zack Allen will be an option.

Defensive Tackles

  • Prolly gone Before we pick:  Oliver (Houston), Williams (Alabama)
  • Likely in play: Wilkins (Clemson), Simmons (Miss St), Lawrence (Clemson), Tilley (ND), Gary (Mich) and Jones (Ohio St):  DT, as you can see, is loaded in this draft.  I would consider taking the DE in round 1 and hoping a DT drops to us around pick 48.

If we grab a DT in round 1 because they are going to be there, we could look for players like  Sweat (Miss St), Burns (Florida St.)  or my dark horse Ferguson (La. Tech--15 sacks).

I am not sure I can buy into Gaulden or Searcy really being an upgrade over Adams or Reid. Potentially a big downgrade. I do think safety is close to our top need, outside DL/OL. I wouldn't get too far down the road with taking DL in the top two rounds either. If it works out that way, sure but I am always a big believer in BPA. That said, it would surprise me a lot if we DIDN'T end up with a DT or DE in the first round. DL is pretty stacked in this draft, the OT class seems to be weak and we don't have the typical "flash" needs like QB, RB, WR.

It doesn’t matter. It’s great to say you could pick the guys in the 3rd that ended up being steals but it’s a guess. I know people may say they liked Kamara but you could say that about a ton of prospects many of whom have not performed. He was hit or miss in everything I saw.

All I know is that with a top RB, a WR who I think can be amazing and a top 25 OL (at the tackle spot), a starting FB and a should have been way cheaper K, we had a heck of a 2017 draft. Probably our best in many years. 2018 if we get our WR1a to Samuel’s WR1b, a solid CB and a starting TE, then I’ll be happy as well. We need a third year with a good draft and we’ll be setup for a good 2019 if we hire a new coach that won’t smother the good young talent.

We just need a talented youth infusion to the dline. The dudes we have there right now are old and ineffective

    • In my opinion Fitterer was probably right about not paying McCaffrey. Now not wanting to "pay RBs" in my opinion isn't something you want to set in stone, to me it all comes down to the individual.
    • Maybe I'm just not understanding, but everywhere that I have read says that signing bonuses go against the cap prorated by as much as five years. The following example uses Andrew Luck's rookie contract as an example. "Take Andrew Luck, the first overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft. Luck signed a four-year contract with the Colts worth $22.1 million and included a $14.5 million signing bonus. Rather than a $14.5 million cap hit in 2012, the Colts spread out his signing bonus over the life of his contract. The hit against the cap would be $3.625 million per year over four years instead of a direct cap hit of $14.5 million directly in 2012. This gave the Colts more leverage and cap flexibility in signing other players." https://www.the33rdteam.com/nfl-signing-bonuses-explained/ I don't know why some of you think that signing bonuses aren't counted against the cap over the length of the contract, but whatever.   "The bonus with a signing is usually the most garish aspect of a rookie contract. Bonus is the immediate cash players receive when they ink a deal. It factors into the cap, but only for the whole contract duration, in terms of salary cap calculations. In the case of Bryce Young’s $24.6 million signing bonus, that’s prorated to approximately $6.15 million per season over a four-year deal. This format allows teams to handle the cap and provides rookies with some short-term fiscal stability, which is important given the high injury risk in this league." https://collegefootballnetwork.com/how-rookie-contracts-work-in-the-nfl/ I understand how signing bonuses can be a useful tool in order to manage the cap, and as one of the article suggests, signing bonuses may become important if you have a tight cap, but the bill is always going to come due. I'm not necessarily referring to you Tuka, but it seems to me that others simply don't want to understand that fact which is why they're reacting to what I'm saying negatively. How odd. In any event, I have a better general understanding of why signing bonuses are used now, and it's generally to fit salaries under the cap. Surely players, whether they be rookies or not, love a signing bonus because they get a good portion of their money up front. This in turn gives them more security and probably amounts to tax benefits as well. I also understand why teams would not want to use signing bonuses, particularly for players or draftees who have a higher probability of being gone before a contract even ends.
