Mock Drafts thread

Current pick: #12

1. Rashan Gary, DL, Michigan
Can play left end or move inside. Our DL is in desperate need of talent and bodies with only Addison and Haynes under contract for next season.

2. Michael Deiter, OL, Wisconsin
He can play all over the line, but is best inside. Would be an instant upgrade at either LG or C. If we're able to retain Williams, at worst our line would be Kalil/Moton/Deiter/Turner/Williams, at best Moton/Van Roten/Deiter/Turner/Williams. I like the second. He can also, if we get thin at tackle, kick out on the right side.

3. Jaquan Johnson, S, Miami
Defense is at its best when it is creating turnovers, and few wear the Turnover Chain as often as Johnson does down in Miami. He's a rangy, ball hawking safety that is eager in run support and brings some swagger to keep Donte Jackson company in the secondary.

4. Matt Sokol, TE, Michigan St
No idea what happens with Olsen in the offseason, but at the very least Sokol can come in and provide competition for Thomas and Manhertz (or whatever other free agent we bring in) with solid developmental upside.

5. Jacques Patrick, RB, Florida State
Big body that can come thump between the tackles that also has surprisingly good hands. He isn't going to juke anybody's soul out of their body, but he will run them over. Let CMC dance and make defenders miss while Patrick can come in, line up behind Armah, and crush whoever gets in their way.

6. Hunter Renfrow, WR, Clemson
With Moore, Samuel, and Wright sure to return that leaves 2 - 3 open WR spots. One of those spots I expect to be occupied by Byrd, Frazier, or a free agent (I expect Smith and Funchess to no longer be on the roster). Renfrow, while not a world beater, makes plays in big moments. At best, we get a slot WR with a knack for making the play (a possible heir to Wright) that can also contribute on ST. At worst, it's a 6th round pick on a WR when we already have a trio ready to roll.

1st pick should really be Left Tackle if possible,..

i get the defensive end thing but our defense showed the last few games that with the right DC they are competitive and even lights out.

the Saints being held to 12 points means they are capable.

draft oline— Let tackle and center.

for Dline— draft a DT and trade Short—

Is there Mahomes type of QB hiding in the early to mid first?

Haskins looks real good with accuracy ball placement major knock is he's only done it one year so who knows if he can do it in the big league.

edit: This could be a perfect Norv project get this young qb able to execute his offense efficiently.

Interesting take. Are you of the impression that William's wont be retained? I can see that with Kalil's price tag being what it is next season, that the team rolls out Kalil/Moton instead and goes for somebody like Greg Little to learn for a year.

DE, DT, and FS are the top three needs IMO - assuming we shift Moton to LT and re-sign Williams at RT. If not, LT has to bump FS out of the top three and we have to hope we can find an affordable FA option or hope that Gaulden makes a big leap going into his second season.

We need to get some of those young LBs some snaps in these last two weeks to see what we might have there. If they can play, that would be a big bonus. Of not, we need to be looking at LBs in the 3rd or 4th because I'm probably letting Shaq walk.

Larsen is an okay stop gap at center, but we need to be looking for a future center in the mid-rounds and OL depth in general. It'd be nice to finally an OG who can challenge Van Roten. I'd really rather VR be a backup.

Nickelback is our other big need. Captain is trash snd is getting cut. Corn is even worse.

Last and not least, it'd be nice to find a legit backup RB.

The massive elephant in the room is Cam's shoulder. Gotta figure out what's going on there.

Defense, defense, and more defense needs to be the thoughts in the first round

First Round: Clelin Ferrell, Montez Sweat, or Jachai Polite (EDGE/DE)

Note: We simply need to draft someone who can get after the QB. I would say that our initial push off the line hasn't been that bad this year but we have clearly shown a lack of ability to get to the QB. I think that this has also made our secondary look worse than it is. It is very hard to cover someone when the QB has a calendar year to throw the ball. We just need to watch the upcoming bowl games and playoff games to see how these players rise to the occasion. Then pay attention at the combine and at pro days to see which one of these three is the best pass rusher. All of these guys are more than adequate in my opinion. But, since the first round pick is one that is critical to every teams success this is one that I am not going to try and breakdown. Each of these players have the production and dominance to be succesful in the NFL. I'll leave this breakdown up to the professionals, as I would be very happy with any of these players. (Will update after bowl season, combine, and pro days are over)

Second Round: Hollywood Brown (WR), Christian Wilkins (DL), or Oshane Ximines (EDGE/DE)

Note: I might be one of the biggest believers in the DJ/Curtis combo, however in the second round why not take a chance on Hollywood Brown, another guy like that. One who is said to be the best route runner in the draft. I've watched him play a decent amount this year and the kid can flat out ball. Maybe we should think about adding another WR that has absolutely amazing potential just to give Cam and Norv yet another weapon to play with.

As far as this year shows, Butler and Poe are not able to really do anything. Wilkins would be a great addition to add along side of KK. Simply put he is a force on the line. Also, you can't sit here and tell me that none of these Clemson D-lineman are gonna be NFL stars. At least one of them is gonna be a big time NFL player so drafting one of them just increases the odds. At the very least I think that he would be able to be the starter along side of KK because of the lack of performance at the position. I would like to see what could happen with our interior d-linemen next year if we have a nice rotation of KK, Wilkins, Love, Poe, and Butler.

Ximines is someone that I really want to watch during the combine. Understandingly, he has a big question mark beside his name because he comes from a smaller school. However, the production has definitely been there. He has been an absolute unit for the past four years. Accumulating 32.5 sacks and forcing 11 fumbles (all of which came in the last 3 years). A couple of pass defenses here and there and an interception to his name as well. This is someone who I believe could have easily been a first round talent if he has been at a power 5 school. And the second round gives us a nice option to take a chance on someone like this.

Rest of the draft: I would like to see the Panthers use their remaining picks to try and address depth and maybe try to hit a home run on a small school prospect or get someone who fell. Maybe they should also consider drafting a QB in round 3 or 4 just to insure that they have a good quality backup because Cam is starting to get up there in age and he has a history of injuries. So, drafting a QB wouldn't be a bad move. Who knows maybe we end up hitting big on a future pro bowl QB and getting Cam's eventual replacement. However, at the very least we can get a guy whom we feel comfortable with if Cam had to miss a game or two next year, someone who can just be a game manager. I would also like to see us go after a bigger RB. I do understand that we have the most unstoppable QB when it comes to 4 & 1 situations, but it would not be a bad idea to use a pick late in the draft on a running back that we can lineup in an I formation behind Cam and Armah to give us the ultimate power set to insure that we continue to get those short yards. A safety would also be a good idea because Mike Adams is very old in football terms. We don't know how our young safeties are going to pan out yet so adding another one to the mix would be a good idea. Finally, another late round TE could be a decent pick because let's face it Olsen is clearly not gonna get much healthier so adding another TE to play along side of Thomas and maybe even take his spot might be a good add late in the draft.
