The quarterback position going forward

Sorry but i'm not looking for a placeholder. Heineke has shown he can be a backup but needs a competent line. We need Will Grier. We need to kick the tires and bet on the future. We have guys who can get the YAC and a checkdown option with CMC. In all honesty, any QB that has decent protection can succeed in this offense. That's if we don't go get another coach. But the idea of having someone sit and extend a career and learn is inviting. And if Cam can't go next year, grab a game manager. This isn't a full on rebuild as there are keys positions in place, but by the time the rest of the team catches up, they'll be moving on. We might be in a Cardinals situation.

If you draft Grier then just cut Cam this year.

You can’t start Grier and then come back to Cam once he’s ready to play. That will stunt the hell out of Grier’s growth.

For the record, I love Grier and think he will be the best QB in the draft. His accuracy in college was elite (much like Mayfield’s) and I think people are underestimating his arm strength.

Signing Bridgewater gives the Panthers the stop gap they need and if Cam can’t play again then we can capitalize on next year’s elite QB draft glass.

I like Will Grier, but don't think he is going to be a franchise QB, especially not out of the box. In an ideal situation, he would be an apprentice behind and aging QB, ready to take the reins in 2020 or, more likely 2021. If he isn't drafted in the first round (and he shouldn't be), then that means he would be on a four-year deal, just beginning to make an impact about the time his rookie deal is done. I'm not sure the Panthers should spend a 2nd/3rd round pick on that possibility.

People are talking like signing a veteran and using a high draft pick are "one or the other" options.

They really aren't.

I think that if we sign a veteran, it means we are drafting a potential QB of the future probably next year.  Signing a veteran (Flacco, Bradford, anybody 30+ years old) is really a stop gap measure to try and be as successful as we 1) if Cam is out for part of next year getting the shoulder back top shape, and 2) after Cam comes back and is out for dings and such for small stretches, or 3) if Cam's should has given its all, to hold the reins until whoever Boy Wonder is can step in.

Agreed.

Newton only has two years left on his contract, so it's not exactly a bad thing to start planning for the future. That becomes even more of a possibility what's Newton's health being a concern.

And if everything works out with Newton, we go the Patriots's route and trade the backup for draft pick(s) and start all over again.  As they have proven, somebody will overcompensate if the guy has shown any inclination that his forward passes actually go forward.

Agreed, with one caveat.

Major League Baseball teams used to make stupid trades with the Yankees for players that didn't turn out to be any good because they thought simply playing for the Yankees made them something special. I think some NFL teams do the same sort of thing with the Patriots (and not just for players but for assistant coaches and front office people as well).

I'm not sure anybody's gonna do that  with us.

They should plan like he’s not going to ever play again.

Cover all the bases and prepare for the worst case scenario.

Hey lets wait til the day before training camp opens to have shoulder surgery,  if needed.

He should be ready, oh, I'm guessing, by the 14 game of the season!!!!!!!

It don't take a genius to decide if he needs surgery or a plan of action!  All these experts should have made a decision the day it was decided he was not going to play anymore this year and get it done.

Winner

Given that connection with Norv Turner, it makes sense.

Jon Beason pointed out one thing in that regard though.

Bridgewater is still largely unproven in the NFL. Even if he plays a good game this weekend, that won't change. Bit because there are teams with a need at the quarterback position, he's likely to get overpaid.

Pair that with who we have at GM, and yeah...
