Tepper won't speak

Minority owners are just along for the ride, they control nothing.  Just as neither Johnny Harris nor Smokey Bissell ever had anything to do with day-to-day operations of the Panthers, Tepper and Haslam had zero to do with the operations of the Steelers -- passive investors, nothing more.

Out of curiosity, what do you consider David Tepper's core-competency to be?  In your eyes what is he an expert at?

You're missing the point.

It doesn't matter.

Building a winning football team is a skill set in and of itself.  Part of it is knowing who to trust with running your operation. and being that nobody else is looking for a GM right now, Tepper could have pretty much anybody he wanted.

But he's choosing to put his trust into two guys who can't even manage a 500 record when working together.

You want to say he's good at choosing talented people? Maybe in the business and financial world he is, but he's never done it in the football world. It's not the same, not even close.

And frankly, his first choices don't exactly show a lot of promise.

I think you are overreacting to the fact he chose not to fire Ron and Marty.  Doesn’t necessarily mean he is putting his trust in them.   Could mean that he is keeping them close until he gets his feet under him because he realizes he has never “done it in the football world”.

I don’t think he made his billions by reaching and overreacting.  A bit of patience may be necessary.

Yup and these moves are setting us back years. I was hoping for a fresh start without major errors but it seems Tepper will be learning the hard way\ Richardson way. I actually question if he really even cares about winning. The easiest way to run the Panthers is keeping everyone in place.

Trust me, it does matter.  Again, what do you believe Tepper's core-competency to be?

Has Hurney's return been officially confirmed?  I share your concerns there, if he is allowed to stay in the GM role again next year I too will be disappointed.

With that said, in fairness to Marty we really have no idea what his true capabilities are.

As per your thesis, Jerry Richardson never trusted anyone to run the show and was constantly meddling, Marty might actually be better than we think he is (I highly doubt it too, but Tepper is operating with a lot better information than us).

Actually, I don't buy the idea that all of Hurney's mistakes are attributable to Jerry Richardson. Having talked to some people with contacts behind the scenes, he made plenty of his own mistakes.

Beyond that, it's just not reality. Even hands on NFL owners don't dictate every little roster decision to their GM's. There'd be no point in having a GM.

and yes, temper is operating with better information than us. Again, that doesn't guarantee that he makes good decisions.

It is a reality and that's why Gettleman left, Jerry wanted to do his job too.

Underestimate Tepper at your own risk, everyone who ever did so has been proven wrong.

If he needs to get his feet under him, there's a simple answer that's also a very popular trend right now.

Consultant.

And fortune smiles in that case because a very successful GM, that guy known for building a top-flight scouting department, just happens to be retiring this season. That guy could examine the whole operation from top to bottom and make recommendations.

So why not go that route?

Consultant?  You cannot be serious?

Which consulting firm do you suggest Tepper should hire?

Any thoughts yet on what you consider Tepper's core-competency to be?

Agree.  What if he did and “consultant” said stick with Rivera and Hurney? I’d say he has advisors and consultants coming out of places he didn’t know existed.

I for one want to give him the benefit of the doubt for a while. Can totally see your point of view. Just don’t subscribe to it. Yet...

If you think Jerry Richardson dictated Dave Gettleman's decisions, explain Steve Smith.

Heck, explain Josh Norman.

Richardson didn't want to "do his job". He wanted to have somebody that he liked, and who wouldn't disagree with him, do his job.

We know from behind the scenes info that Richardson never really wanted to fire Hurney in the first place. Hurney was basically "GM for life" per Darin Gantt, and success or failure didn't mean anything. But as Joe Person reported, when Richardson was ready to fire Ron Rivera, Hurney fell on the sword to save him.

But then after working some with somebody who he didn't like, even though that person was significantly more successful, Richardson decided that loyalty and personality were more important than success, and here we are.

As to Tepper, he absolutely still has a chance to be a good owner in the long term. Obviously, I hope he will be.

But right now, he's making a couple of big mistakes, mistakes that will make getting to that eventual success harder.

You seriously can't tell who I'm hinting at from that post?

Really?

Understand, I'm not saying he'll never be successful.

I am saying his current choices are a  Mongolian Cluster @#&$ waiting to happen.

Tepper's "core competency" is the same as every other wealthy person.  He buys low and sells high.

But comparing the Panthers purchase to his every day business is apples to oranges.  This was an ego purchase.  Which I totally do not have a problem with because I know the end game for that has to be a benefit to both the casual fan and the fanatic.  Anyone who expected sudden changes is going to be disappointed.

Easy.

Cam and Jerry didn't want Steve around because he was hurting Cam's feelings.  All Cam had to do was say "guys I got this, I want Smitty on this team and we will work it out between us", simple as that.

Cutting Josh saved Jerry and his partners $13 million.  There is no other explanation.  It was a knee jerk reaction by Jerry, he is very thin-skinned and got mad about all the public rhetoric during negotiations and decided he'd teach Josh a lesson.  He did, to the detriment of the team.

If you can't identify Tepper's core competency you're in no position to evaluate the situation.

    • Thielen was a "dawg" like Dan Morgan likes to say. And they replaced him with puppies.  The analytics are probably saying this is more targets for younger receivers they are hoping to develop, specifically the first round pick from 2025. The eye test is going to show a very inexperienced group of WRs that are going to have some serious growing pains, for a 3rd year QB who has not yet proven to be the guy going forward.  It's crazy how in the literal first game of his NFL career, Cam Newton showed everyone he was a star QB and there was never any doubt about that. It almost didn't even matter who was around him, although he definitely had a serious lack of talent at WR for most of his career. Bryce is going into his third season and there is still a ton of doubt, and who is around him is seen as crucial for him to have success. I don't like it.
    • Everyone says AT was old and slow but the one thing he could do consistently was get separation. That takes skill and it's been a huge issue in our WR for years. And while Moore may be a great locker room guy and our WR coach may be a 12 year vet, he's not playing in the game. Vets like AT do what they do because they can see things others don't and exploit it. The DB interview I mentioned before was with Stephon Gilmore after his DPOY season. He was pulling the younger DBs aside showing them things you wouldn't even think you'd be able to tell from the way the receiver was standing.  Seeing what a DB or LB is biting on in game that can give you that half step advantage is huge and we don't have that experience in our WR group right now and I think it could end up hurting us. None of our receivers have lined up against NFL corners successfully on a regular basis. Having someone that can walk over and give you a tip to get a half yard separation can be a difference maker.
    • We only fielded about 4 NFL calibre players on that unit last year.
