FA intro draft strategy

I would like to sign only 1 main FA. Trey Flowers DE from NE. He could be that difference maker. He's probably gonna get about $14/15mil a year but I don't think the DE market will explode with so many DE's in the draft. He's young and experienced enough to give a 4 to 5 year deal with a lot guaranteed. 

I could see them signing low level deals for TE (just in case), WR (either tall or a burner) with experience and maybe a young LB who was more special teams for someone else ready to make the jump to starting or rotating (unless we keep Mayo). I can see them signing an experienced FA if they get a good deal or then drafting one in the mid rounds. I would doubt a 3rd round pick either. 

The draft is deep with defense rounds 1 through 3, so I would take LT as my top pick. Chances are we could get one of the top 2 -1st round top prospects.

Having Flowers would allow us to grab a DE or DT in the 2nd or 3rd. I could see those 3 picks being DE, DT & C. (DT if we don't resign Love, which I like).

RB's and WR's are deep 3rd through so we can get our RB then. I would still look at TE's early to mid. As much as I love Olsen we need a back up plan and even if he plays this year, having Thomas and another really good TE would be nice.  

I don't use names in the draft as I think the BPA in a position of need play into that. Who's rated the highest at the time we pick.

I would be happy to with Preston Smith as well. I thought he was the best 4-3 DE in the draft that year and I feel like he's largely been playing out of position in Washington's 3-4. Now before everyone starts screaming about Rivera talking 3-4, let me just say that first of all I'll believe it when I see it. Secondly, unless we completely overhaul our front seven, our personnel still fits a 4-3 front much better. IF we go to this hybrid front defense, I still expect it to be primarily 4-3 concepts with 3-4 concepts mixed in, probably primarily on obvious passing downs. The good thing about a guy like Smith is that even though I think he's likely best suited as a hand in the dirt 4-3 DE, he has lots of experience in the NFL standing up as a 3-4 OLB, so he can absolutely do either or. I think he'd be a really versatile piece for us and given the strength of the edge rusher draft this year as well as some other potential bigger fish in free agency, he's a guy we might be able to get for a relative bargain.

Basically, Preston Smith is my defensive Greg Olsen. He's THE guy I wanted in that draft that year and he went elsewhere and has performed decently but I think he has a lot more to offer in the right situation.

I think we're to the point where we're forced to add an impact edge rusher. The only proven NFL edge rusher we have on the roster is Mario Addison and he's on the wrong side of 30 himself. We need to sign an impact FA and then still draft another one early.

We're seeing a youth movement beginning here. And I would expect to see a few of our free agents (especially those available for compensatory picks) be allowed to walk. Honestly, I think it's not just a youth movement to clear some of the old lions out of the den, but possibly the first step in a rebuild in case Cam's arm doesn't pan out. 

We might see some folks go in FA that we wouldn't necessarily think as expendable. Darryl Williams, for one, could be allowed to test the market with the idea that Moton proved himself at RT and that a LT might be reachable in the draft. Trading up could be cheaper (with the rookie contract levels being set) than trying to either grab a tackle on the open market or resigning Williams.

I think Hurney 2.0 learned a lot from the time off and I think RR is seeing that this version of the team is pretty shop-worn and ready for a refurbish.

Considering how badly we have flailed around at OT for the past decade I certainly hope we don't get cocky and think that all of a sudden it's an easy spot to fill. As we we'll know, it absolutely isn't. If Daryl's knee doesn't check out or if some team wants to throw stupid money at him that's one thing but we can't let him walk with a healthy knee and a market value RT contract. That would be an incredibly stupid move.

Even if Cam's arm doesn't pan put and we have to rebuild, there's nothing better for the development of a young QB than a strong OL.

How dare you even think that Hurney 2.0 is better than 1.0??!?!11?!/?  

I mean, we haven't won a Super Bowl since he came back!  How good can he be?  We need <insert cool dog here> from <some other team> to be a REAL GM!

I'm there with you.  I think Hurney has learned and should do something better than he did before.

I certainly hope so. Right now, I'm mixed on my opinion. His draft last year looks very strong, but his free agency class pretty much looks like vintage Hurney. At least we didn't throw huge money at anyone.

My point is don't let a quality young OT walk if he's healthy and some other team doesn't offer insane money. Then you can go elsewhere with that 1st rounder. The whole bird in hand theory.

      I understand where you're coming from, but we need another safety IMHO. Other positions, especially on defense, dont have ideal depth, but to me at least S is the one position we can't stand pat at even when thinking about the future

      100%. Nick Scott was awful last year. Like, even for a franchise that hasn't historically invested in that position, it stood out for how awful it was. If he sees meaningful snaps at S again we're cooked.  Maybe he has value for ST, but I certainly hope we can upgrade. Jordan Fuller, who was by all accounts an Evero guy, was almost as bad. Xavier Woods was bad, but not complete garbage. Still did not want him back. Those 3 guys seriously may have been the worst S group in the NFL. And they all were brought in, especially Fuller, as good fits for this system. Everyone knocks the defensive line, and they deserve a lot of blame, too, but so, so many times our safeties inability to tackle let 4-5 yard runs turn into 10+. And it happened over and over and over again if you watch the film. Honestly, Demani Richardson was the only S by the end of the year I remember making positive plays. I have no issue with Richardson being in the mix and/or competing to be a starter, but we still need another S desperately IMHO who has actually played meaningful snaps in the NFL. The only caveat/excuse for our secondary was the fact our pass rush was nonexistent for large stretches last year. Maybe that helps with coverage, but I dont see how that makes any of these guys better at tackling.  I know it somewhat feels like piling on at this point, but I feel 100% confident in saying this was the worst tackling team in franchise history. The 70ish yard pass play we gave up to Jamarr Chase where he ran through and past everyone in the secondary has to be up there in terms of most embarrassing plays I've ever seen. I can't imagine how embarrassed Kuechly must have been watching from the booth... I think bringing back Evero was a mistake, but for a team that has had nothing but change over the past 5 years, I'm willing to see this through. I definitely think we added significantly to the floor of this defense with the additions we made. I dont think Evero has any further excuses if he cant field a unit that can at least somewhat hold their own. Fixing the safety play is going to be a big part of that.
