if Olsen is healthy hes a top TE

if he says hes healthy and willing to play you have him on the team

Name me a 33 year old non-kicker, non-QB who has come off of two down, injury plagued seasons and then returned to form to become a top player at his position. Don't worry, I'll wait.

But you said he's a top TE if healthy. I even gave you the benefit calling him 33. He'll be 34 in about two weeks.

Look, I love Greg Olsen. He was a great TE for us. The best TE we've ever had, yes better than Walls. He's a borderline HOFer. But the reality is that he's going to to be 34 next season, he's missed half the games played in the past two seasons, and he honestly hasn't been very effective in the games that he has played. That's just the truth of the matter and it honestly pains me to admit it.

However, if ESPN insists on having two analysts join Tessitore—or if they would even consider reassigning McFarland and giving the booth a completely new look—here are five candidates for the gig.

1. Peyton Manning: Networks are in love with the idea of having the future NFL Hall of Fame quarterback calling games. Manning reportedly turned down multiple television deals last season. Will ESPN go back to him with a blank check? They already have an in with Manning, who does work for ESPN+.

2. Kurt Warner: Warner has called a handful of games over the years for NFL Network and does games on the radio. He's very good in the booth and very likeable. He's also a big name and a former quarterback—two things networks love.

3. Nate Burleson: He already has a daily gig with NFL Network’s Good Morning Football and does the CBS pregame show each Sunday, but he is a rising star in the business. Burleson opened a lot of eyes calling a couple of NFL Network games last season and generated a lot of positive feedback on social media. It would also give ESPN a chance to give the booth a younger feel.

4. Dan Orlovsky: Speaking of giving the booth a younger feel, ESPN loves Orlovsky and features him on several of their studio shows. He is all about X's and O's and has a knack for breaking down plays. He hasn't called any NFL games, but ESPN has showed that isnt't a requirement to get this job.

5. The Golden Calf of Bristol: If ESPN wants to cause a splash and generate some buzz, nobody would do that more than The Golden Calf of Bristol. He's already an ESPN employee, working as an analyst on the SEC Network.

i mis spoke then.

if it were up to me id scrap the whole team/ coach/ GM...  and start completly tepper fresh

since the SB window is caught and held open by a pinky finger, might as well bring back the old TE that has the postential to still be good.

He was embarrassingly bad on the microphone. Why did they put him out there? Still surprised to see him returning to football.

Exactly my thought.  He was absolute trash at announcing.  If a team like he Cowboys will pay you 3.5 mil and you can save face by leaving "on your own" at a job you suck at... good for him (and NFC east opponents)

Pretty much. Maybe this is just a total saving face move.

Here's his statement:

"The fire inside of me to compete and play this game is just burning too strong," Witten said in a statement, per the Cowboys' official website. "This team has a great group of rising young stars, and I want to help them make a run at a championship. This was completely my decision, and I am very comfortable with it. I'm looking forward to getting back in the dirt."

Do you really need to point out this was completely your decision unless, well unless it actually wasn't? Even if he didn't get canned surely he had to know there was a good chance that he wasn't going to be invited back to the booth this season.

Adrian Peterson. Played only three games in 2016, then suffered a torn menucius.  Got released, did nothing for the Saints, got traded, played ok for the Cardinals, but missed the last 5 games due to injury.  This year, 33 years old and was a 1000 yard rusher for the Skins.

That being said, it is rare.

Mine was the opposite. Nice, Greg is retiring. Love Greg, but I think he's done as an effective NFL player but I know Rivera would play him over the much younger and at this point more effective Ian Thomas as long as Olsen's foot was held together by that duct tape and bailing wire.

Olsen is a baller.

He can play the Shockey role, and still mentor Ian.

Greg ain't going anywhere, and it's a joke that ANYBODY thinks having Olsen on the team is going to hold it back.

I can't believe the majority of what gets said in these forums.  Y'all are outta your mind.

Wow.

That doesn't mean he's done.

Thanks for the update.

Olsen will be the 5th highest paid TE in the NFL next season. He's missed 16 games over the past two seasons. In the 16 games he has played, he's caught 44 passes for 482 yards while also showing decreased effectiveness as a blocker. You have to go back to his Chicago days to find worse production than that. Meanwhile, Ian Thomas caught 36 passes for 333 yards in only 6 starts this year.

It's not that I don't think Olsen couldn't be a very good #2 TE for us, it's that for one, I don't think for a second that Rivera would relegate him to that role and two, we're paying Olsen top 5 NFL TE. Three, big men with recurring foot injuries have abyssmal track records for recovery.

Sorry man, the writing is in the wall but you're stuck in Hurney/JR thought processes where we give favorite aging vets with rapidly declining performance big contracts. The best thing for the Panthers would be for Greg to return next year and return to form, there are just very slim odds that will actually happen.

I honestly don't give a *** what his contract is. He's earned it. Then I also know with him being healthy he's a straight-up baller. Or I also know that just him being on the team and his leadership is second to none. So while you want to put him down and put him out to pasture, I still want them on our team and our team is desperate for leaders after jettison so many other leaders already.
