How early would you take a QB?

Why waste a draft pick when there are more pressing needs elsewhere? I like Allen and think we're fine with him. The kid's got potential and makes faster decisions than Heineke imo.

Yessir.. dude’s actually performed in a Panther’s uniform in an actual nfl game and can’t get any love. Could be a Warner, romo, jake, or even a Derek Anderson/Matt Moore nice career backup for all we know

There’s some drunk ass Duke fans in here... I’m from just outside Charlotte NC born and raised...Panthers fan from the start. I could give a rats ass about the college team rivalries and such, but no actual Panthers fan would say that.  I’m definitely not a what pro QB came from what school aficionado but what fuging pro QB worth a damn ever came from Duke? We don’t tell you how to play basketball, lacrosse , and badminton. Remember you drink a Stella Artois with pinkies out...this Christian Ponder 2.0 cheerleading nonsense while our former MVP of the NFL big boy league gets the chance to work his way back from injury, which he’ got while  carrying this damn team is nonsense. He’s more than earned that chance

Bawahahahhahahahhahahahahahahahah

and I’ll do it again,..

Bawahahahahahahhahhahahhahahahaha

yeh go play some badminton while drinking Stella with the pinki up.

In all seriousness,.. if it was a Patrick Mahomes or DeSean Watson to draft to sit for a year and either take over or trade or whatever, no one could argue that.

but in this case where a quarterback starved draft has 5th round picks climbing into the first it’s ridiculous.

No allegiance to Duke here.

Simply assessing the risks and rewards the Panthers face going into next season and making a decision/recommendation as such.

What I find interesting is how certain self-anointed "fans" feel so threatened by the suggestion that drafting D. Jones would somehow put Cam at risk...why is that?  Why would Cam be afraid to compete with D. Jones?  Are we afraid of hurting his feelings?

Where does the fear come from?  The over the top response denigrating Duke University and those who associate with it seem to indicate a self-esteem (or lack therof) issue with the attacker.

Oh lord here comes the indignation police.

Im sorry i besmirched the great name of Duke Football. I really don’t have beef with them or the player himself. You bring up risk/reward...a lot of high draft pick QBs bust out completely. So therefore I, as a Panthers fan, would be pissed that they wasted the 16th pick on a BACKUP QB...when we have BIG holes on defense to fill. It’s about using resources wisely. You don’t try to replace your franchise QB so quickly.

You don’t draft a QB in the first round to compete with your franchise QB. Cam was playing at  a high level this year prior to injury and came within a dropped pass in the end zone with a bunch of 3rd and 4th string wrs of beating the Saints in their dome which  in the playoffs which is incredibly hard to do.  Just playing the odds it’s highly doubtful Daniel Jones ever sniffs a Super Bowl as a starting QB or becomes league mvp ever.

The only way it’d put Cam at risk is keeping the rest of the team around him inferior which anyone with eyes can see has been the major issue.

When has Cam ever acted afraid to compete with or against anyone? He kept playing long after he knew his shoulder wasn’t right...knowing full well that folks like yourself would jump on it...yet he kept battling. It’s called perseverance my man.

Lastly...Psychoanalyze away Sigmund Freud but me thinks thou doest protest too much and wear thy tidy whiteys way too tightly. I wasn’t denigrating Duke or cracking jokes due to fear and I can’t say it better than T.O. “I love me some me”. I was  simply being sarcastic and making fun of what you and your Wonder Twin said because it was stupid.

I didn’t even quote you or personally call you out but since you asked for clarification I wrote it in an etch a sketch for you Mr DialTone

Curious, what are the key characteristics (in your opinion) which  define Mahomes & Watson, and how do you feel said characteristics will contribute the their success going forward?  Do you feel both are future Super Bowl Champion QB's?

Same question, setting your personal biases aside (which may be tough), if you were forced (as hard as it may be for you) to list the key characteristics that might lead to NFL success for D. Jones from The Duke University, what would you say those key characteristics are?  Remind you of anyone?

you don’t draft a backup quarterback at 16. He’s a 4th round pick at best. He’s only sniffing high in this quarterback scarce class like always.

Ha right on...thats a little before my time..it really wasn’t anything against the school. Honestly Id have been a smartass if someone was suggesting we took some 3rd rd QB from anywhere  or wherever with our 16th pick

You are certainly entitled to your opinion.

@Verge has an inside NFL contact who says D. Jones (The Duke University) will be the 2nd QB off the board, and will be inside the top-10 overall (and I agree).  As such, it's unlikely the Panthers will Luck into (no pun intended) being able to pick him at #16 but if by some miracle he is slips that far Tepper & Hurney should be prepared to pull the trigger on D. Jones from The Duke University.

Do you really believe D. Jones won't be picked before the 4th round?

Phillip Rivers is an 8-time Pro Bowler and I can see D. Jones taking a similar path.... (8x pro Bowls is a big deal)

So you are saying draft a quarterback at 16 that will probably never play for the panthers?

Nope, not what I said.

This original thing was you said you would draft Daniel Jones at 16.

Whether the Giants or Cincinatti or Denver or Raiders or anyone draft him in the first, most top 100 prospect ratings have him in the 30s and 40s. Most scouting reports you read on him are 2nd and 3rd round grades.

In a most quarterback rich draft he would be a 3rd or 4th rounder like last years draft or next years.

At any rate— you only draft that guy at 16 if you have no quarterback.

We do.

Depends on the player. I’d run to the podium with tears of joy to get Murray at 16 but he’s obviously going 1st. Grier probably not until the 3rd round. Lock in the 2nd hell yeah but he’s probably gone before our first pick anyways. Not a huge fan of many of this year’s QBs.

Any Qb drafted at 16 means last year's Starter is likely out the door

If any team drafts a Qb that high they have been planning it all off season
