Overlooked : Greg Olsen Is Now 98th All Time in Career Receiving Yards

With Sunday's performance Greg Olsen has now vaulted into the top 100 career receiving yards in NFL history, which was probably lost in the messy jumble of negativity in our continued losing streak.

13 year career with 2 injury plagued seasons lately have made people forget he's been raking up some stats.

Currently :

  • Age 34
  • 676 Receptions, 7993 Receiving Yards, 57 Receiving Touchdowns

I was honestly surprised he could still run so well after those foot injuries. If he plays as long as Tony Gonzalez did, he'd be in for the remainder of this season and 3 more seasons as well.

Looked at the various tight end rankings , Greg ranks anywhere from 20th to 10th. Probably won’t make the HOF but he’s been a pretty good asset for Carolina. Will do great things in the booth.

I don't seem him making the HoF unless he plays abnormally longer than other TEs to age 39 or 40 or something. Right now his pretty much only real distinction is being the first TE ever to get 3x 1000 yard seasons in a row, and then Travis Kelce did the same thing a couple seasons later.

Kelce is only 30 with playing with Mahomes so for all we know he'll tack on 5 more 1000 yard seasons to his  current streak of 3 assuming he stays healthy.

If he could get in if he got 10K receiving yards, 1000 receptions, 100 TDs but thats a lot to ask for given his current stats and age.

He could also get in if he turns in another trio of 1000 yard receiving seasons to close his career but I doubt he's going to play that long.

Some contemporary examples include:

  • Jason Witten : Year 16, Age 37, 1159 receptions, 12,488 receiving yards, 70 receiving TDs
  • Antonio Gates : 16 years, Age 39, 955 receptions, 11,841 receiving yards, 116 receiving TDs

So really in historical terms, Greg's been extremely solid but nothing extraordinary.

According to Panthers latest stats article, Greg just moved up past Ozzie Newsome

Greg Olsen tallied 110 yards on six catches, including a 41-yard reception. It marked his first 100-yard receiving game since 12/17/17 when he had 116 yards against Green Bay. With his performance, Olsen passed Ozzie Newsome (7,980) to move into fifth place (7,993) in career receiving yards by a tight end in NFL history.

    • Not sure how much he was a long term piece of this team.   Sucks to not have him as part of the rotation.   Looks like it's Lee Hunter time.
    • This post was an error. Oops and sorry for the errors in the previous one. Too slow to edit.   We’ll see what they do.
    • I am not sure he will put the over the games but we’ll probably have them.   Two things I am thinking.  We have 4 preseason games.  All the coaches have enough service time to know the standards that are in place for decades. If I recall it was play your starters just a series to start woth and build it up until week theee where play a lot and you have week four to set hour roster. Evaluate before cuts.   Bevell will certainly have the whole thing down pat.   I’d they don’t do the fries and frie air will worry too. Because it is set up to do that.     I have said since they went t three preseason people have to figure a new way are still feeling it out and trying things.  We don’t have to this year.
