So until we are out I want to win every game we can.   So to win this week we need to help Allen out.  Which means we need good sound ball around him.

Which means I am going  to come out against the Ray Ray McCloud experiment.  He IMO is too high risk/reward.   And I am not certain how high that reward actually is.

He got a shot last year in Buffalo to return punts.  Muffing/fumbling was a problem.

Ron gave him a shot.  Muffing/fumbling again a problem in his one appearance.   Just because we didn’t lose them doesn’t then make them not an issue.

I think we need a new punt returner this week.  Safe is better IMO.  We can’t afford to lose the turnover battle.

He had an awful muff for sure, but he has had some solid returns.

I would be down for Pharoah Cooper, but I'm not unhappy with McCloud other than one play. I think he brings a lot more to returns than Godwin (who just lacked explosiveness) did. And Godwin muffed punts too...

STs is all about risk vs reward.  I think McCloud has been a solid addition so far.

I was pro-Byrd for a long time, but he simply couldn't stay healthy here.

Of the issues with this team, I think ST and defense are chasms of depth above the abyss that has been the offense.

Should have kept Byrd imo, injury or not that man did not muff punts from what I can remember and also could fill in at the 4th or 5th WR spot, you would think we’d put more emphasis on it

byrd looks great in kingsbury's offense

It wasn’t just one.  He muffed 2 out 3.

which is exactly what got took him off the field last year when Buffalo tried it.

I’m a firm believer that you either are or aren’t an NFL returner.   Just seems too risky with where we are . And it isn’t like his upside is Devin Hester to make it worth the risk.

The sad thing is though that just about anybody who's available right now is likely to have the same or other issues.

This was something we needed to take care of in the offseason, not three weeks in.

I don’t know...

I’m pretty sure there are plenty of guys who lack the upside but can perform the basic duties of the return job.   Sometimes a Mark Jones type is the better answer when you can’t afford to be risky.

That's kind of the question.

If you want a guy who just basically won't drop the ball but isn't necessarily going to get you a lot of yards, you can probably find that.  And that would be a very Ron Rivera type move.

That's not gonna do a lot for your field position game, but that's the trade off.

Well I guess that is my point.

With a young backup QB I guess you can go about it two ways.  Try to limit the errors everywhere else because frankly you know their will be some issues on O. Or gamble more elsewhere to try to aid him because he will make mistakes.

I would say game 1 with Ray Ray....the risk isn’t worth it though.  You muff it as consistently as he has in limited opportunities over two years then you better be Devin Hester

Me? If I'm looking at a young quarterback doing his first (real) start, I'm probably looking to get him all the help he can get. That means a return man that can get some good field position.

Granted, the opposite mindset is just as valid. It's just a matter of what you prefer.
