What is the plan when Cam returns

Heard an interesting discussion on Sirius today about what we should expect when/if Cam returns.

Do they let him be the dual threat that DC’s hate to plan for?

Do they ask him to become more of a pocket passer and depend on CMC?

Cam won’t be able to run forever, he’s 30 and fighting injuries. I’m thinking the staff and even Tepper want to see Cam evolve into a pocket passer. Tepper isn’t handing out 30+ million to a guy who struggles in the pocket.

They gotta run him. Hes not 100 percent if they dont.

Conversely Allen has had three games where either his opponent had nothing to play or his defense played lights out (14 sacks in two games)

so so we really have no clue how that will shake out

I'm going to leave the first statement be, its already been covered.  Overall,  the past 2 weeks something has clicked with the team as a whole and its fuging exciting.

If you're going to bring Cam back this year, it better be as a dual threat qb. As a straight up pocket passer, I'd rather have Allen starting. I suggest whenever Cam says he's ready, hold him out 2 extra weeks to ensure he's fully healed and then unleash him peak Cam style with a heavy mix of RPOs, designed runs and deep passes.  If he's not healthy enough to do that, then keep him on the injured list until he is.

got plenty to suggest this actually.

but anyhow, just curious on how cam isn't a pocket passer. when he's back to pass, isn't he not in the pocket passing? i can assure you his scramble rate has actually been one of the lower in the league.

designed runs? sure. but that doesn't mean squat when analyzing his ability as a pocket passer.

Completion percentage, sack rate, and the eye test.

Has our OL ever done Cam favors? No. Has Cam consistently had great weapons? No (Olsen being the lone constant). However, when Allen comes in and is absolutely completing a higher percentage of passes and the offense is moving with more consistency down the field, you can't ignore that. And Allen is playing with the same offense. How does it look this much better as far as efficiency goes?

Cam is a pocket passer, Cam is not a traditional pocket passer. Allen is. They both stand in the pocket, but one operates an offensive gameplan as such and the other operates a gameplan centered around the QB being a run threat. You can't sit with a straight face and tell me that Cam is equally as dangerous standing in the pocket and running three times all game as he is running 8-10 times. Cam's dual threat ability is the best the league has ever seen. He's elite. Take that from him, he's average. Even last year, where he was showing improvement with efficiency, he was still a run threat. That is what helps his game.

If Cam can't come back able to run the ball 2015-esque, he has to match the effectiveness of Kyle Allen. Because if he doesn't....well, shits gonna get very awkward in Charlotte on Sundays.

The goal for Cam probably should be some sort of present-day version of Steve Young.  Young was primarily a runner in his early years, largely because he played for the Bucs and he had to run for his life on almost every play.  At some point he learned to turn that running into moving the pocket or buying time by escaping a collapsing pocket so his receivers could get open.

Expecting a 30-year old QB who has recovered from injuries in places critical to the QB position (shoulder in this case) to regularly "take it to" linebackers, especially after he has shed 15 or so pounds, is just asking for something that is not likely to end well.

Young, Moon, and McNair are probably the prototypes for where he needs to aim.  Their running ability had to always be respected, they just did less of it, by design, later in their careers.
