Carolina Panthers Defense through 6 weeks :

  • #1 in sacks (27) (NE 2nd with 25)
  • #2 in interceptions (9) (NE 1st with 14)
  • #2 in total takeaways  (15) (Tied with Steelers) (NE #1 with 16)
  • #4 in turnover differential (+6) (3 way tie with Packers + Steelers) (NE #1 with +9)
  • #11 in avg yards allowed per game (344) (NE 1st with 235)
  • #9 in avg passing yards allowed per game (225) (49ers #1 with 150 damn!)
  • #21 in avg rushing yards allowed per game (119) (Bucs #1 with 68)
  • #14 in avg points allowed per game (22.2) (NE#1 with 8.0 holy poo.)

What I gleaned from this , we're doing great putting pressure on opposing QBs and  taking the ball away, arguable the two most important defensive stats. Still top 10 passing D, above average almost everywhere except for rushing yards.

I'm also realizing that the Pats defense is nasty this season. Also Niners have an elite passing (#1 in passing yards against)  and run stopping defense (#6 in avg rushing yards against) , which could be problematic.

I love switching a stout run d for a stout pass d. Those sacks are key and I fugging love them. The interceptions are the most surprising to me. Having a strong D isn't a surprise to me, it was literally the one thing we should always have under Rivera.

The only problem the defense has right now is aggregate stats that add up over time, because of the lack of consistent offensive production.

Here’s the offensive production on the day:

4 plays — (-2) yards — FG
3 plays — 0 yards — Punt
12 plays — 84 yards — Touchdown
3 plays — 0 yards — Punt
4 plays — 36 yards — Touchdown
3 plays — 3 yards — Punt
4 yards — 20 yards Punt
5 yards — 39 yards FG
1 play — 8 yards — Touchdown
10 play — 75 yards — Touchdown
3 plays — (-4) yards — Punt
3 plays — 4 yards — Punt
3 plays — (-4) yards — FG
3 plays — 9 yards — Punt
4 plays — 1 yard — Missed FG

Out of 15 drives, 13 resulted in 5 or fewer plays run. Of those 13 drives, 7 of them were 3-and-outs w/ only one of them resulting in a FG. That is NOT inspiring football on the offensive side of the ball. With our defense giving them 7 turnovers and 7 sacks, there’s simply no excuse for our offense dragging along late in the game. It’s even more ridiculous that despite the sacks and turnovers, the Bucs had a legit chance to come back near the end.

    • Backup QB has been an issue of mine for a long time but not just for Bryce and Dalton. We have never really been able to develop QBs or build an offense around strengths. Dalton isn't going to move the needle one way or another. The problem is in our FO and possibly coaching staff (current staff undetermined as of yet). I'm of the belief that you always try to get better. Dalton wasn't good other than one game against an abysmal defense. Churn the roster, including backup QB. If BY isn't the guy we've got to start over anyway. Who knows. We might actually find someone good. Other teams have done it before.
    • Lol. Worst case? I think you mean most likely result. I don't think people are going to be wasting much breath on Dalton or QB2 if Bryce flounders this year. It's going to be people calling for coaches, GM's and owners heads for the mess we got ourselves in with Bryce in the first place. Rightfully so.
    • I mean that's his sole reason for being here. He doesn't win football games. He's here to keep Bryce comfortable.
