Tepper just said it in his interview with Voth explaining the moves today.

Tepper said, "Marty Hurney is one of the best recognizers of college talent in the nation.  Period.  I don't want to lose that."

I love this.  I stated something similar in all-pro.  Hurney is far from perfect, but his ability to hit big on the picks that matter is uncanny, so that is an asset.  But he needs balance.  His decisions in FA have been pretty bad, so bringing in someone to handle that side is perfect.  I know this is a bummer for many, but I love it.

Safe for now or for next year? 

I think Hurney has done a solid job his 2nd go around but keeping him long term would shock the hell out of me

I do think coaching has been a bigger issue than talent but I’d rather clean house everywhere

I completely agree and just said the same thing elsewhere about the coaching.  Hurney hasn't been the issue since his rehire.  The coaching has been.  Less talented teams are winning across the league.  Hell, you could argue the Saints are less talented than us, top to bottom... it's what they do with the talent they have.

So, giving Hurney a coach who actually knows what's they're doing, plays to strengths, works on weaknesses, and optimizes talent instead of favoring guys just because is going to make a huge difference.

Yes, Gettleman was able to win with Ron, but I can't explain how, because the teams under Hurney have been much more talented and Ron couldn't produce.  I'm excited to see Hurney with a new coach bc I believe in Hurney's eye for college talent, and I believe a new coach can excel with what Hurney gives him.

As to your other question, it sounds like long-term.  I included Tepper's exact quite from that snippet, and that sounds like he really likes Hurney.

Here's the interview (discussion of the GM job starts around 4:30)

He's complimentary of Hurney, but around 5:15 also mentions that he could bring someone in as a potential GM.

Overall, sounds like he wants to keep Marty as part of the organization but it may not necessarily be in his current role. I'd speculate that he could make him head of the scouting department or something along those lines.

Not just an analytics guys, one of the five best performing hedge fund managers of the past two decades.  Tepper is a legend on Wall Street, a guy seen as having the golden eye for recognizing undervalued assets.

I've been saying for a years that Hurney has one of the best draft records of any general manager over the past 30 years in the NFL.  He has literally drafted more Pro Bowlers than anyone in the league over his tenure.

I'm glad someone as brilliant as Tepper was able to recognize this, despite the irrational mob of Panthers fans who lack analytical abilities and obsess over a few mid round picks that Hurney missed (as if it's possible to draft in the middle rounds without missing on a lot of prospects).

Hurney is the 2nd best drafter in in the NFL over the past 20 years (Ozzie Newsome).  He might be the best 1st round drafter in NFL history (and despite what people think, hitting on big name talent is by far more important than anything else).

I included his direct quote, Scot. Lol, he said he didn't want to lose him.  I would say that means he's safe and wants him around long-term.

I've been saying the same thing, but it seems many have always been stuck on this idea that Hurney is a reporter who brown-nosed his way into a football job he wasn't qualified for.

I don't care if he was a milk man in his previous life, he knows how to draft.

The further he explained, I don't think so.  He described Marty as like the head GM and if he were to use a business term for the impending hire, he said they would be like the COO.  So, I'm thinking it's gonna be a collaborative GM office.

      He’s responsible for two drafts classes. The first was one of the worst drafts I’ve ever seem. The second one is showing a ton of promise. I’m somewhere between skeptical and hopeful on Morgan.

      I'm a big fan of Dan. His ability to find productive players deep in the draft will pay off.  I'm going to give him 1.5 draft classes right now, because I do think it's a little unfair to evaluate his first year when he got the job in January, especially when we went into that draft not having a first round pick.  XL and Brooks are still big time TBD players. Both still have incredibly high ceilings, but both have also given us legitimate reasons to have a lot of pause. Trevin Wallace, Chau Smith Wade and Jatavion Sanders have IMO outplayed their draft position early in their careers. That's a great thing. He also got Coker and Demani Richardson as UDFAs that year. Given the situation we were in, I really don't mind the gamble on the high ceiling guys. Still may work out, still may not, but if you made a checklist of ideal situation for an NFL GM to walk into, ours was near the bottom of that list.  Every single 2025 pick is contributing in some way. That typically doesn't happen. I am absolutely blown away by this draft class 6 games in. Even the best GM's miss on occasion, and we can't expect Dan to be 100% on drafts moving forward. Ryan Fitzgerald was an excellent find as well.  Comparing our last two drafts to the previous few is pretty shocking. Can you imagine this season without our Rookies? It would not be good. Additionally, this roster only has 6 players with more than 6 years of experience, and two of those are specialist.  The next step is equally important, and still very much TBD. We have to avoid Cap Chaos.
