I would fire Hurney just for this

Are you kidding me?  It was obvious to all of us who the better long term solution was for the team when the move was made.  Games are won and lost because of kickers.  Just look at the past three seasons if you need a refresher of how many games we lost due to our kicker sucking in crucial moments.

You realize Gano was one of the top kickers in 2017 and 2018, right?

The tape we had on Butker *at the time* was limited to a rookie kicker in preseason.  Yes, he made kicks.  Guess what?  So did Slye.  This is why veteran kickers are valuable.  You know what they are.  If you looked at Slye over the first few games, he looked fantastic.  Now?  Not so much.

Exactly, and Butker looked like garbage in training camp.

There was nothing obvious about a 7th round kicker being better than Gano.

This isn't about being better, which Butker has been since the decision was made, it was about long term value for the team.  Hurney boofed it, like he normally does when it comes to these things.

Did Gano probably make more sense Butker's first year?  Probably, if you are only looking at that particular season in a vacuum, but when you are the GM, you have to look at the big picture, the long term effects of your decisions.  If they were even close to equal, which they were, then keeping the younger, cheaper, longer signed player was the right call.  Hurney made the wrong call, and now it's hurting the team, and will continue to do so for at least 1 more season.

Classic Hurney.

The best part was that we did absolutely nothing with the cap space we freed up. In essence we just made it more expensive to cut him which means we’ll stick with him longer and waste even more money. Before the restructure he had around $12M in dead cap to cut after this year and now its $17M so we’ll keep him and pay him an additional $13M in cash meaning the restructure costs us $18M. That plus wasting $12-14M and maybe we cut Cam due to cap space when we could have kept Cam for a trial run.

Had we kept Butker we wouldn’t have had to restructure Short and we could have easily absorbed the Cam cap hit just to see if he was healthy. Damn that boulder picks up speed going downhill.

The move to restructure those two contracts made absolutely zero sense at the time, and looks WAY worse now.

Dumb team.

I would rather fire Hurney for Armanti Edwards than this, Gano has been a solid kicker for us tbh.  How soon we forget the likes of Olindo Mare

He was a late third rounder. You are hoping for someone to develop or hitting the lottery. And we got greg hardy in the sixth round...

Do you think, or research anything before you post?

Did you know that we had signed him to a 4 year deal?

Good lord.

When you have two kickers - you keep the younger cheaper one.  No brainer.   You trade the other to a team that needs one.

Yeah hindsight is 20/20. Did he make a reasonable decision at the time?

I mean we passed over Lamar Jackson to get DJ Moore...

No - it isn't just hindsight.  Butker already looked like he had the goods and we screamed that he wasn't retained.  Everyone on here was talking about it and the reason why they tried to keep both for a while.  When he finally had to cut one - he cut the wrong one.
