I would fire Hurney just for this

Just to put this blunder into a bit of perspective.

Our cost for kickers since we decided to move on from Butker and stick with Gano:  $14,700,000.00

Our cost were we to have kept Butker:  $1,680,000.00

So, we would have a healthy kicker on the roster that is one of the very best in the league, and under contract for 1 more season for less that $800,000.00, and an additional $13,000,000.00 in cap space.....

Nah, just hindsight.

One of the very best in the league? Butker is 15th in FG% and 20th in XP%...you can plead your case without being so hyperbolic and sensational. It’s really only about the cap savings, because you can’t objectively argue Butker outperformed Gano the last two seasons.

Well I can see now I have clearly overlooked a literary gem. I will pick it up forthwith, just as soon as I am done with Fire & Blood.

Not sure if you are being flippant. Doesn't matter.

I thought it was just an absurd attention grabbing thing when I read it. We had a wonderful English teacher at the time and he explained the symbolism in this and it turns out to be a really important bit of prose in the book. Very meaningful.

Anyway you should read it. Can't guarantee you will love it or even like it. But I think you will appreciate the significance in American writing.

But he can be tedious. Hemingway defines stream of consciousness.

He was such a great GM that multiple teams were clamoring for his services when he was fired.  smh

You’re not even trying to be reasonable in this conversation you’re just trying to flame and hate on someone. I was simply pointing out the fact that the biggest issue with our kicking situation has nothing to do with the decision of the GM made. The question about why our medical staff allow the kicker to continue to kick last year with a broken leg and then didn’t get him surgery until this year, almost a whole year after the injury is The biggest piece of the Gano v Butker Argument, you could argue Gano was just as good if not better before he broke his leg.

Since signing that extension Greg has started 21 games for us, compiled 843 yards, and 6 TD's.

Total cost for that?  $18,270.000 when all is said and done.

Good players get injured all the time. He's balling this season with the worst starting qb in the league.

Going to help you out a bit here.

Butker plays in one of the hardest kicking stadiums in the NFL.  He has attempted 98 field goals since signing with KC, Gano has attempted 46.  Butker has attempted 136 extra point attempts, Gano has attempted 70.

Cool, so long as that's happening, with us going nowhere, then I guess that I can get on board with the $18,000,00 in cap space that's gone.......

The Gano extension doesnt bother me as much in the context with Rivera as HC, FGs are going to play a huge part in Ws or Ls. I thought Gano and Butker were relatively equal and hindsight has proven correct. But again, knowing Ron's penchant for last second theatrics, it makes sense.

What doesnt make sense is yet another questionable, and that's generous, call by the medical staff. WTF is going on with these guys?

Let's kick Olsen out and have Manhertz at TE1.

Do you think before you post or nah?

I don't have a problem with Olsen, I have a problem with his contract, and WHEN the contract was offered.

We offered him a contract, while he was injured, with another year remaining on his deal.  So a hurt big man with another year on his old deal, who had already hinted at retiring.....yea, let's give him some more guaranteed money when we don't need to.....stupid move.

I mean, if they are relatively equal, and they are statistically, although Butker attempts a LOT more than Gano......why on Earth would you opt for the older, more expensive, shorter signed option when given the choice?

The money is really bad, but the decision is even worse, that's where the problem lies.

Rookie kicker vs vet. You know what Gano gets you. Slye looked awesome to start but has returned to his statistical norm from college. With Ron, you know you are going to have to rely on a kicker for wins. It's an expensive choice, and was in fact the wrong one, but I understand the "safe" pick. I'm not saying I agree with it (I don't), or liked it at the time (I didn't), just that based on Ron, I get it.

He would have retired if we didn't offer him that and we'd be stuck with some bum at TE1.

You got any proof of that, or you just gonna speculate?

It was stupid then, it's stupid now, and when we have a dead cap next season because of it, it will be stupid then.

As a GM, you have to do what's best for the team, both short term, and long term.  Hurney did what he does, bow down to Ron.

Were a competent GM sitting in that seat, he would have told Ron to kick rocks, we drafted this kid, he's cheap, and he's signed long term, end of discussion.

We had, and somehow still have a spineless GM that cannot figure out how to manage the salary cap.
