They were on teams where the owner told his fanbase they were in a rebuild for the next 5 years?

A condition which actually makes you more likely to part with older players. And also at the same time makes older players want to play somewhere else.

With someone like Shaq Thompson making $14MM per year, it seems like a fuging no brainer to keep Cam next year at $19MM. That’s a bargain. If he lights it up, you pay that man his money. If he doesn’t have it anymore, you thank him for reviving this shitshow of a franchise for as long as he did and move on. It’s not like we are gonna get a generational QB in the draft picking at 5-7 range anyway.

Only in your eyes.  Its best for the team to see what they have in Cam.  Its best for Cam to play next year.  If the team wants it to be here it will be here no matter what Cam wants

All of the leagues best QBs were taken later than that. Much much later.

With the records and tie breakers being what they are, we're likely going to end up in the 8-10 range and that's assuming that we lose out.

So there you go. These dreams of 8 teams passing over Joe Burrow for him to fall to us or any of this other nonsense I’ve heard ain’t happening. Keep Cam, draft a dominant offensive or defensive lineman, see what happens and move to the 2021 season with a clear proactive vision for the future, not a half assed reactionary process.

this.  people acting like this is a tough decision. it's not rocket surgery, it's a game that entertains us.

That assumes he's willing to play under that arrangement, though.

Contrary to popular belief, if he doesn't want to, you can't really make him.

And if I'm one of Newton's people, I'd be asking why should he assume all the risk? if there's another team out there that's willing to gamble on a longer contract or more money, why shouldn't he take that? And I'm afraid I'd need a better answer than "loyalty to the Panthers".

(for the fans, the kids or the puppies doesn't really work either)

Cam needs to play next year. If he sits out a year, 1 he will still be under contract with the team and 2 there will be another season he hasnt played.  And then what? He sits out again?  It makes no sense for him to not play out his contract if that is what the Panthers want.

    • lol, that second part is quite literally one of the dumbest things ever. Having or not having guaranteed contracts has absolutely nothing to do with how much these billionaires have to pay.  Because there is a hard cap and a minimum cap spend requirement, and teams either use their cap or roll it over to use it all the next year, so the owners have to pay the same amount of money in the end no matter what. Having fully guaranteed contracts in the NFL would only hurt salary cap management, and thus would end up screwing over the team and its fan base when teams kiss on signings as they take up cap room that is needed to improve the roster. Look at the Browns with Watson, they gave him the fully guaranteed deal and all it’s doing is sucking up massive cap space now.  If they hadn’t done that, the owner would still be paying the same amount of money each year as that cap space would still be used elsewhere. If you want to argue for fully guaranteed contracts because the players deserve it, that’s an entirely different argument and a fair one to discuss.  But anyone against fully guaranteed deals isn’t doing it to argue for the billionaire owners.

    • Ryabkin could be the steal of the draft, he was a Top 10 pick heading into last season and had a rough year.  Lots of GMs passed on him because of that and his workouts. Pick has really high upside and Svech should be able to translate Rod tearing his arse a new one for making dumb plays since Svech has had several years of it.  🤣😂
