Leadership: 2015 vs Today

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

Someone made a comment in a thread that made me curious so I thought I'd look at them side by side.

Owner: Jerry Richardson / David Tepper
General Manager: Dave Gettleman / Marty Hurney
Assistant General Manager: Brandon Beane / None

Head Coach: Ron Rivera / Perry Fewell (interim)
Assistant Head Coach: Steve Wilks / Norv Turner (technically titled "Special Assistant to the Head Coach")

Offensive Coordinator: Mike Shula / Scott Turner
Quarterbacks: Ken Dorsey / Scott Turner
Runningbacks: Jim Skipper / Jake Peetz
Wide Receivers: Ricky Proehl / Jim Hostler
Assistant Wide Receivers: Cam Turner / Jerricho Cotchery
Tight Ends: Pete Hoener
Offensive Line: John Matsko (has since been given the added title of "Run Game Coordinator")
Assistant Offensive Line: Ray Brown / Travelle Wharton
Offensive Assistant: John Ramsdell / Drew Terrell (Offensive Quality Control)

Defensive Coordinator: Sean McDermott / Eric Washington (officially)
Defensive Line: Eric Washington / Sam Mills III (also listed as "Game Management" Coach)
Assistant Defensive Line: Sam Mills III / None
Linebackers: Al Holcomb / Steve Russ
Assistant Linebackers: None / Everette Brown
Defensive Backs: Steve Wilks / Perry Fewell
Assistant Defensive Backs: Richard Rodgers (currently listed as Safeties Coach)
Nickel Backs: Curtis Fuller / None
Defensive Quality Control: None / Vincent Rivera

Special Teams Coordinator:  Bruce DeHaven / Chase Blackburn
Assistant Special Teams: Russ Purnell / Ben Jacobs

Strength and Conditioning: Joe Kenn
Assistant Strength and Conditioning: Jason Benguche / None

The only guys who still have the same duties as they did four years ago are John Matsko, Pete Hoener, Richard Rodgers (ugh), Joe Kenn and (mostly) Sam Mills III.

There are a few spots where I might say we're better (OC, though it was more Norv than Scott; hopefully team owner) but in the vast majority of positions I'd say we've either gotten worse or it's a wash.

Overall...Ouch.

That’s all you need to know.

While I agree, I think the difference in defensive coordinator looms very, VERY large.

We replaced arguably one of the best in the game with Eric Washington, and then when he failed Rivera tried to cover for him rather than letting him go and getting someone more competent.

The impact of that was devastating.

Yes I should have included McDermott. The guy who is having decently good success up in buffalo. I mean it’s not like him and beane made it to the playoffs or anything 2/3 years.

Edit: In a division I should add that the top spot is basically already locked.

I've long said that I liked Ron Rivera as a person, but the whole McDermott / Washington debacle makes me mad enough to wanna curse him.

Seriously Ron, what in the bloody hell were you thinking?

There you go.  Let it out big fella.  Its cathartic.  These people are stupid.  They just pretended it was ok and never ruffled a khaki or tugged a croaky.  He mowed his lawn and attended the HOA meetings.  Good Guy Ron for the LOSS!

I said in another thread that if Rivera had hired a real DC, there is a good chance he would still be here. Wilks was at least qualified for the position.

It will be interesting to see what role Washington has on Rivera's next staff wherever he ends up.

DL where he is best suited. Unless he wasn’t the one calling the line switched back when we were good.

I think I'm also coming around to the idea that defenses are just too cyclical for you to base your team around them.

Some defenses stay good for a while, but most do not.  Maybe it's differences in offenses, differences in schedule, personnel, whatever....Just seems like you can build a consistent year in and year out offense, but that doesn't seem to work as well with defenses.

Maybe it's just the rule changes and the bounce of the ball, but much like 1 score wins and INT's, they just fluctuate so much.
