Keep Joey Slye?

This is actually a difficult decision. Slye finished 23rd of 33 in FG%, 25th of 28 in XP% and 1st in the NFL in Kickoff Touchback percentage. HOWEVER, all of his misses(XP and FG) came down to five games. So he had the full yips in 5 of 16 games. As for money, he was currently making about $500k and I am assuming his contract next year would be somewhere between that and $1 mil. If that were the case, for next season....we would basically save about $400k in cap by cutting Gano and keeping Slye. Cutting Gano only frees up about $1.4 mil in cap space.

Looking at Graham Gano's last two seasons of work, he is very clearly better than Slye. HOWEVER, if you compare Gano's first season to Slye's, it gives one pause. In Gano's first FULL season, he only hit 68.6% of his FG's, having misses in eight games total. Also, Slye's XP percentage this season(88.6%) was not substantially lower than Gano's since the rule change in 2015(94.9%, 91.2%, 91.9%, 90.9%). Gano has also never had a touchback percentage in his career as high as Slye's.

In my opinion, this is basically a coin flip. You can decide to ride Slye and hope he improves or you can keep Gano until you have a better option(he generates more cap space to cut in 2021).

Something to remember, Slye was asked to kick nearly twice as many 50+ yarders than Gano was ever asked in a single year.  Most 50+ attempts Gano had was 6.  Syle went 8-11.

Slye has 22 kicks from 40+.  Going 16-22.  One single time Gano kicked as many from 40+.  He went 17-23.  With 17 of those in the 40-49 range.

I am not advocating for keeping Slye over Gano.  Only showing that just looking at his total misses isn't the full picture.  This year we put Slye in a horrible position as a kicker.  He was going to miss more than normal just because of the fact as soon as we hit mid field we were apparently in field goal range.  Combined with an offense that regularly sputtered out..it wasn't going to be pretty.

This is a good use of numbers to put things in perspective, good poo. Quality huddle post.

My concern about Gano is his health. Not quite sure what his latest injury was... Saw something recently about a fracture, but it seems he's battled several things the past few years that have kept him off the field.

There was so much turnover with kickers this past year. Seems like a lot of teams are looking for a better kicker. I lean towards trying to trade Gano and keeping Slye since we're in rebuild anyway. See how Slye is in his second year...
