DT vs. OT

MHS831

Thomas vs. Brown: What kind of tackle are you picking at #7?

81 members have voted

  1. 1. If both LOT Thomas and DT Brown are on the board at #7, who do you pick? (explain your rationale)

    • OT Thomas
      51
    • DT Brown
      30

This question is why I hope the Raiders would be willing to move up to 7. At 12, depending on who the first 6 taken are, we may still be able to get a tackle at 12, and have a second pick in the first (I mocked having to give up our second). We should also get their 3rds if they made that move. Those 2 extra picks could land us a guard and center and our line is in a whole lot better shape, theoretically. We may be giving up a top talent, but we have a lot of holes to fill and the 3rd round could solve some woes for us.

On the topic, I really don't think defensive tackles get enough credit. They're just as valuable as defensive ends but since everybody loves edge rushers, they rarely get their due.

A guy who can clog the middle or push the inside of the pocket so that a quarterback can't step up to avoid pressure is a valuable asset. With a lot of these guys, the stats don't do justice to just how much of an effect they have.

With all that said...

There's no way I can go against a strong line anchor to protect the heart of the offense. I've watched what our team looks like without one long enough.

I go left tackle, no question.

I agree completely.

We have LONG ignored the offensive line around these parts.

Brown, pre combine, give me Thomas's agility scores first and I may change my answer. There are also 3 positions on the Oline that can be upgraded to help protect Cam. D. Brown will effect the entire Defense by himself.

Yes but if the D sucks this year, there will be some other enticing DT prospect next year. If the oline sucks this year, it may mean so long Cam. One thing you can afford to fix later, the other you cannot.

Do you truly think that Cam plays for us this season?  I just can't quite wrap my head around him wanting to.

I don't think we will be in the top 10 next year, jmo. I think you go proven FA LT, draft C in the 2nd and a LG in the appropriate Rd. I dont think we will get a chance at a D. Brown again and honestly dont think there is a him in every draft.  Add Brown, KK comes back, and either keep McCoy or draft Leki and I believe our defense will be worlds better. This include the resigning of Tre and Bradberry wich as far as I heard they were working on. Cockrell as well....

I think that Cam's options at this point are, play for us, prove he's still got it, and go from there...or call it a career. The thing I cannot wrap my head around is him calling it a career, therefore I see him playing for us. I'm not the guy who makes declarations about what absolutely will or won't happen, so as with anything I say, it is subjectively just what I think sitting here at the keyboard.

if you are sent to the store by your wife with an ingredient list for a cake, but a limited budget, and don't need eggs cause you already have eggs at home..  are you going to pick up more eggs and not have enough money to get another essential ingredient like baking soda or flour?

cause thats what a Rookie OT is. fresh eggs from the store. unproven potential when you already have that in the fridge. unproven potential. and then youd gave a flat ass cake too

The only way your analogy works is if you accept the fact the eggs you have at home have been in the refrigerator for weeks and could be expired. Do you risk the eggs at home or just start over with new eggs from the store?

Better safe than sorry in both cases. You really can't have enough of good olineman. Depth at that position is so valuable late in the season when your lineman may need a few plays or games off. It's rare a full starting 5 makes it through an entire season completely healthy with 100% snaps played. Depth is incredibly valuable.

And just because we take a OT at 7 doesn't mean Littles career is finished. Moton is a FA after next season we have a need at LG possibly as well.

Hey if you think he's a unique prospect, I can respect looking at it that way. I'm not really opposed to doing FA LT myself as long as we're reasonably sure it's the best solution for the coming season.  I guess in that sense it comes down to do people feel that any of the FA LT's are likely to be a better option than whatever LT we could get with 7, be that Thomas or whoever. If yes, go for it, if no, we better go LT in the draft because the way I see it the single biggest priority for the coming season is to give Cam every chance to show he can be our guy for the forseeable future so that our rebuild doesn't start with starting over at QB, which suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu *pauses for breathe*uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucks.

Hurney isn't drafting a LT a season after trading up for "our future left tackle". Bitch and say what you want, Id bet good money we will not be drafting LT

Strong point.  And it would not be the first time Hurney's pride and ego clouded his judgement.

Well let's pray to GOD that Tepper meant what he said about Hurney not having much say in football operations anymore. If Matt Rhule wants a OT at 7 we will be taking a LT at 7. Fug Hurney

Yeah, of the things @The Huddler has said on this topic, there are some I disagree with but this one is uncomfortably difficult to dispute. I can talk about what I think we should do, or would do if I were in charge, but I have a bad sinking feeling he's completely right about this, which imo sucks.

Again, I seriously S.E.R.I.O.U.S.L.Y doubt Hurney has even the fraction of power/say as he has in years past. This is Matt Rhules team. If he wants a certain player or position drafted you really think Tepper would let Hurney sabotage that?
