My Day 2 Picks

I will admit I was one of the many who wanted Simmons to fall in our lap at pick number 7.  Sitting on the couch I felt like a giddy school kid when our pick was up and Simmons was there for the taken.  When the Commish announced we took Brown at 7 over Simmons i immediately was pissed off.  It was the sexy pick.  I am already determined i was buying Simmons Panthers jersey for this upcoming season.  Over the course of the next hour fuming about Rhule/Hurney's pick i became to come down and think rationally.   Panthers had the bottom of the league ranking in run defense.  Not our culture.  With the smartest move Rhule/Hurney could make they took Brown and analysis and experts from all over LOVED this pick but the Panther fans seem irritate about it.   However, lets be honest this was the RIGHT pick.  NFL is won in the trenches.  Can't have a great QB throwing from their back because of a terrible OLine, we should know a think or two about that.  Can't have a great defense with a great Defensive line.  A great defensive line makes linebackers better and secondary better.  THIS WAS THE CORRECT PICK.  So far I give Rhule/Hurney an A grade for this first pick.

DAY 2:

#38 Carolina Panthers select safety LSU Grant Delpit.  6'2 213.  With the aging Tre Boston and the passive signing of Juston Burris who is hybrid between safety/nickel corner.  Panthers lock down their safety for the next 6-8 years.  Delpit coming from DB-U, LSU, has great range and definitely isn't afraid of coming up in run support.

Kenny Vaccaro
Overview
Aggressive, urgent striker with good upside who posted a disappointing follow-up to an exciting 2018 campaign. His evaluation requires a full load of 2018 tape, where his coverage potential was better illustrated. He transitions with instinctive eyes and plays physically against tight ends. Willingness to rush in and hit has never been a problem in the alley or in his fits, but tackle inconsistencies have plagued him throughout his career due to angles and technique that could be challenging to fix. LSU sources say NFL teams won't be getting the alpha leadership Jamal Adams provided for the Tigers, but Delpit should find a starting role early in his career as a versatile safety with big nickel potential.

Round 3

#69 Carolina Panthers select Cameron Dantlzer CB Mississippi State: 6'2 188 ran 4.64 40 with 34.5" vertical.

Al Harris
Overview
Very long, stringy cornerback with surprising strength and a competitive mindset that had quarterbacks looking for easier battles elsewhere. He looks to suffocate and contest the route from start to finish and does an excellent job of maintaining phase in the vertical plane. His cover style will draw attention from NFL game officials early on, but the athleticism and length should allow him to trust his technique. He won't give up many explosive plays through the air, but is a high-risk tackler in run support and needs to do a better job of wrapping and finishing. Dantzler can play in a variety of coverages but is a future starter as a confident press-man corner with early starting potential.

Winfield sucks

I'm dying to know what research led you to this conclusion. Antoine Winfield Jr. is the second best safety in this class. He's very instinctive and disciplined. Go watch the Penn St game. He was outstanding!

If you want to compare him to Delpit, please do. Be sure to include all of Delpit's whiffs.

He’s a better returner than safety.

I know people like the idea of Delpit because he was a potential top 10-15 pick before the season started but man he did not look good on the field this year.

He takes some horrible run angle pursuits and I think they’ll be plenty of better options on the board when we pick. I know our secondary is bad but let’s be honest, this entire defense isn’t being fixed in one draft.

Somehow getting Epenesa or Gross Matos would be huge for this defense. Yes the secondary would be tough to watch, but we’d have our front 4 figured out for the foreseeable future.

    • WR: Nico, Woods, Tank (R) TE: Schultz OL: Tunsil/Howard/Deiter/Mason/Fant vs. WR: Chark, Thielen, Mingo (R) TE: Hurst OL: Icky/Zavala (R)/Bozeman/Jensen (R)/Moton   Panthers' had the better OL before losing BC week 1 and AC week 4 which is kind of ironic considering how in the following year DB went down in W1 and Shaq in W4 resulting in the defense going all to Hell. CJ has done amazing in Houston, but he also wasn't asked to carry Zavala, Jensen, Mingo, Hurst, and Chark as a rookie.
    • Past 5 seasons, IMO CJ Stroud and Joe Burrow are the 2 best young QBs that have emerged in the league in that window.  They also didn’t need vets to be their primary pass catchers.  They helped fellow youngsters be great at WR.   almost all the other young QBs have been paired up with vets in their top options….and haven’t been as promising.  so it isn’t Madden.  But the league hasn’t played out as you suggest it does.   Good QBs make others around them better.
    • In 2023 their roster wasn’t stacked. They nailed the poo out of the 2023 draft and since they knew Davis Mills wasn’t the guy, they tanked properly to get pick 2. They also took Cleveland’s ridiculous offer for Watson unlike us with Burns. Houston received enough draft capital to jump up to 3 while picking up the right guys in Anderson and Stroud. The Texans were not stacked or better than us in 2023. They had 11 total wins from 2020 to 2022. They didn’t have a terrible front office so they made sure they got their QB of the future while tanking well and getting more draft picks. They are a textbook study of what we should have done in 2022/2023 offseason even though people in here still think tanking is a bad word and our culture would be bad if we were the Texans. We literally had the chance to be the Texans right now and fuged it up.
