Teddy Bridgewater vs. the Field

These kind of posts are always risky and ripe with tons of counter narratives, so I'm surprise how much I agree with the OP.  I probably only disagree with 2 or 3 guys at most.  Most notably, I'd rather have Teddy than Josh Allen (salary being a non-factor).  In the end I come away with this to summarize who I think Teddy Bridgewater is.

If you put a healthy Teddy with the 2017 Jags, they would be Super Bowl Champions instead of getting knocked out in the AFC Championship Game.

If you put a healthy Teddy with the 2016 Lions, they barely win any games and are competing for the #1 pick instead of 9-7 and a wildcard team.

In short, he will run the offense as its intended to be ran but he's not going to make many throws that are better than the play design or the guys around him.  He's also not going to make a lot of mistakes.  If you put a championship team around him, he's going to help you compete for a championship.  But if you put a crap team around him, he's not the kind of guy that will put a team on his back and make it happen.

I think most of those middle of the pack QB's like Teddy are going to have lots of good arguments for and against when you compare them to the other middle of the pack guys. Elite QB's are likely to be elite just about anywhere, bad QB's are likely to be bad just about anywhere but that middle group is going to really depend a lot on the situation around them. That is actually why I thought this would generate a lot of good discussions for why to take some of them over others. Some will be eye of the beholder, some will be injury history/age, some will be offensive fit, etc, etc.

Like I said, I did this exercise over the phone with a buddy and we had a lot of fun debating the different QB's.

And this has been a consistent issue with Bridgewater his entire career. His sack percentages are extremely high.

I just don't know where this idea is coming from that he's this guy who makes quick reads and gets the ball out quickly. He's not Drew Brees. He did what a good backup does and he held the fort down admirably last year while Brees was out, but if you were actually watching the games it was very clear that he didn't just step into Brees' shoes. There was a stark difference in his play and Brees and it's reflected in the numbers.

Yeah and Kyle Allen won five games for us too. Does anyone think that the Saints would have had the same season had Brees gone down at the point Cam did and Bridgewater started the rest of the season? Teddy is fine but to pretend he isn't/wasn't a big drop off from Brees is completely absurd.

Watch PJ Walker have to come in and absolutely go ham early in the year, leading us to 10-6.

I kid, I kid.

I’m honestly excited about PJ Walker.

He’s put some really good stuff out there for people to see. He’s only 25 and needs to clean some things up and be more consistent but his ceiling is higher than Teddy’s. PJ himself said he just needs reps and it’s true.

Allowing him to come in with a little security (2 yr deal) and familiarity with Rhule could really do wonders for him. By all accounts Teddy is a really great guy who could help Walker out as well.

I really do hope we get a chance to see him later in the year.

I said awhile back people who would lose their minds over some of the sacks Cam would take are in for a REAL treat with Teddy.

Teddy has a habit of taking some of these sacks at the worst possible times imaginable as well

I know people want to desperately cling to that six game stretch of filling in that Bridgewater where he put up solid numbers. To that I would just say to look at Kyle Allen's first 6 starts.

Bridgewater's 6 games:

5-1 record. Face 1 playoff team.

132-195 for 1370 yards and 9 TDs vs. 2 INTs. 67.7% completion rate. 12 sacks. 1 fumble.

Kyle Allen's first 6 games:

5-1 record. Faced 3 playoff teams.

116-191 for 1291 yards and 9 TDs vs. 4 INTs. 60.7% completion rate. 20 sacks. 6 fumbles.

People keep ragging on me for saying that Bridgewater is basically Kyle Allen minus the fumbles, but... he is.

I'm more excited about Walker than Teddy. IMO, Teddy is a known commodity. He's in that good backup/marginal starter camp. Walker at least offers the intrigue of being an unknown commodity in the NFL.

So we went out and got ourselves a Trent Dilfer or Kyle Boller or maybe an Alex Smith if we are so lucky.

great

Well, he's a stop gap guy, his contract structure pretty much proves that. TBH, it feels more like a security blanket for our new staff/OC than anything else. It is what it is.

I don't think he is a below average QB.

uh you ranked him 22/32 quarterbacks. that is the definition of a "below average quarterback" both quantitatively and qualitatively

I would generally put him in the "average group." To me it makes more sense to put them in a tier structure than a pure 1 to 32 ranking. Elite, Above Average, Average, Below Average, Bad, etc. Something like that. And some of the guys I put ahead of him could easily be argued to be behind him.

you said you don't think he's a below average quarterback and then ranked him in the bottom third of quarterbacks lol
