Picking After the Hornets

Is there any better position to be in than picking directly after the Charlotte Hornets? If I’m a GM and the Hornets have the pick ahead of me, I’m feeling pretty good.

Let’s take a look:

2019: pick 12 PJ Washington, pick 13 Tyler Herro

The jury is still out on this one, but I’d rather have Herro based on last season alone.

2018: pick 11 SGA swapped for pick 12 Miles Bridges, pick 14 Michael Porter Jr.

Lol, would much rather have SGA or Porter Jr. A lot on this board wanted either of those guys. Bridges should at least be a role player though...whether we ever get a star and actually need role players is another question.

2017: pick 11 Malik Monk, pick 12 Luke Kennard, pick 13 Donovan Mitchell

Ouch. A lot here wanted Donovan Mitchell. Huddle should handle drafting.

2016: Traded pick 22 for Marco Belinelli, who played one season for us and scored 10 ppg. Pick 27 Pascal Siakam.

Lol. Plenty of good role players followed like Furkan Korkmaz and Dejounte Murray. And of course, Siakam. Wouldn’t be a Hornets draft without narrowly missing a star player, even when picking 22.

2015: pick 9 Frank Kaminsky, pick 10 Justise Winslow, pick 11 Myles Turner, pick 13 Devin Booker

While Winslow and Turner are not superstars, they have certainly been better than Kaminsky. And of course Booker. A lot of Hornets fans wanted Booker or Winslow. Heck we could have even drafted Rozier and saved a few years.

2014: pick 9 Noah Vonleh, followed by Elfrid Payton, Doug McDermott, Dario Saric, Zach Lavine, TJ Warren, Jusuf Nurkic

Some of these guys may not be stars, but all we had to do was pick literally ANYBODY except Vonleh here. Oh but this draft continues.

2014: pick 24 Shabazz Napier swapped for pick 26 PJ Hairston, pick 25 Clint Capela, pick 27 Bogdan Bogdanovic

Lol we have to be the absolute worst drafting franchise of all time. These aren’t cases of “we missed some random foreign star that came like 10 picks later” These are all cases of there being players available at our pick, who were picked right after (and sometimes that we even traded away) who we were actually scouting and considering and us choosing the wrong guy literally every single time.

This makes me emo as heck. But, I will say that I trust Mitch in getting this team in the right direction. Mitch was getting a lot of the heat in LA but since being here, he has made some very good decisions. I’m a big fan of Miles Bridges but I did want MPJ at the time. It was going to be a difficult decision to take MPJ bc of the injury. I don’t care too much for Shai Gilgeous. Would’ve loved Herro but PJ Washington is going to be a problem in the NBA. Herro was able to showcase his ability in the Playoffs by being surrounded by a much better team. A lot of our problems in the past was that Jordan was getting involved way too much. I think that Jordan has finally found someone he trust to make the tough decisions now to where he can just sit back and watch. But the biggest problem was that we had this idiot named Rich Cho who seriously believed that he could based off drafting players from a stupid system he created.

Chucks bball takes are top notch. I wanted MPJ simply for the chance at him becoming a superstar, it was worth the risk at that point. They still had nothing to lose, this team must draft stars, its the only way to get them here currently.

    • I sold mine when Tepper installed those soccer seats in the end zone using the Marketplace. I retired and couldn't afford the season ticket price any more. Got back what I initially paid for them in 1995. From the email I got, my guess is a family who had end zone PSL's used the $ they got to give up their seats to buy mine. Don't give up @Waldo. The upgrades coming could do the same for you.
    • Don’t get me wrong, I love Koochie. I think he could be a star. But I’m not convinced Rod trusts him. And I realize my post was confusing. I meant based on the reports of swapping Necas for Ullmark or another goalie. If we’re going to trade for a goalie I would rather use draft picks instead of lowering the value of Necas.
    • You can make a decent case that most of the starters are at-least average. But depth-wise, its awful, maybe the worst in the NFL.  The only reason they could be a playoff team, is the awful NFC south and its collection of bad QBs and coaching staffs. That changed big time when cousins and Morris arrived to ATL. Now it would take a setback to cousins, in which he currently ready to play given all the stem cells and peptides stuff he has.  In past years there was always some elite talent leftd on the 7 win rosters. Like many know theres just dbrown and a huge ? in horn. If hunt was elite, phins would have tagged him. There's no Thomas Davis, Luke, Cam, Olsen, peppers, kalil, beason, gross, Jenkins, Smitty etc on the team. Brown is great and all, but sacks and pressure wise, he's not game changing. Panthers lack difference makers, young ones. You could make a weak case for clowney, but that ravens D is stacked.  Us fans just need to hope Dan Morgan can collect more young difference maker in the next 2-3 years. If Bryce isn't that guy, 4 years before this team can sniff the playoffs.  Honestly the panthers are due some luck as well.
